The UN climate chief has called on the United States to present its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at a UN climate change conference in Denmark next month.

Yvo de Boer, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention of Climate Change, made the call at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York on Thursday.

De Boer said he has no doubt that the conference will yield a success, but acknowledged that prospects for a binding global agreement on climate change remain elusive less than 4 weeks before the meeting.

He said the UN secretariat has been offered targets by all industrialized countries except the United States. He called on US President Barack Obama to join world leaders at the conference with specific targets and financial commitments.

De Boer also said industrialized nations must put at least 10 billion dollars on the table in Copenhagen to kick-start immediate action. He added that they must list what each individual country will provide and how funds will be raised to deliver very large, stable and predictable financing, without the need for renegotiation of the commitments every few years.
