SEA Games marathon: Singapore's Soh Rui Yong wins gold

SEA Games marathon: Singapore's Soh Rui Yong wins gold

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Soh Rui Yong Guillaume won the men's marathon gold at the 28th SEA Games with a time of 2:34.56 on Sunday (Jun 7).

He beat Thailand’s Boonthung Srisung in the final 400m at the Kallang Practice Track to clinch the top spot, TODAY reported. Srisung finished 13 seconds behind at 2:35.09.

Singapore's other representative, Ashley Liew, finished eighth with a time of 2:44.02.At one point, Soh was 40 seconds behind the leader, Thailand's Sirsung. Soh caught up halfway through, and kept pace with the Thai athlete up till the last kilometre.

And with 200 metres to go, the 23-year-old turned on the afterburners to finish first. "That's the way to run a marathon - be patient," said Soh. "So I cut the gap from 40 to 30 to 20 and eventually caught up to them at halfway. And then, it was just a battle of attrition."

SEA Games swimming: Singapore win 3 more gold on night of records

SEA Games swimming: Singapore win 3 more gold on night of records

SINGAPORE: Swimmer Joseph Schooling stamped his name on the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games and into the record books as Singapore dominated the second night in the pool at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, winning three of the six gold medal up for grabs on Sunday (Jun 7).

The 19-year-old flexed his muscles in the second event of the night, claiming gold and a new SEA Games record in the men's 100m freestyle and bookmarked the evening by leading out his countrymen in a dominant display in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Singapore's head coach Sergio Lopez said the relay team had "made a statement" and he forecast the international potential of the talented swimming squad. "I believe we could be very good, it's just a matter of training. We have great leadership, " he said.

Schooling had to share some of the spotlight, however, as Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Anh Vien proved again why she is a force to be reckoned with in Asian swimming by winning gold in the 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley, both in record time. Her only blemish a fourth placing in the 50m butterfly, which was won by Singapore's Tao Li in 26.58 seconds, also a SEA Games record.

Tao was impressive from lane 4 as she beat compatriot Quah Ting Wen by nearly half a second and Filipino Jasmine Alkhaldi, who snatched the bronze. Quah said she was pleased with her race, despite missing the gold.

"I've been practicing my dives, I had a good race; everything went to plan," she said. "We got a first and second so I can't be happier for Singapore.

"In the pool we push each other, it's fun, we're also all very competitive. We never actually think about trying to beat one another, we are one Team Singapore, we will stand as one and we try and beat other people," said Quah.

Tao's win set the tone for the night, as a boisterous crowd decked out in red exploded in cheering as Schooling brought home the 100m freestyle ahead of Quah Zheng Wen and Vietnam's Hoang Quy Phuoc, both of whom already had gold medals under their belts this meet.

Malaysia's Wong Fu Kang out swam the fancied local hope Lionel Khoo to win the 100m breaststroke, leaving Khoo to slap the water in disappointment as he failed to medal, behind Radomyos Matjiur from Thailand and Joshua Hall from the Philippines.

Samantha Yeo did manage to add to Singapore's count though, battling in Nguyen's wake to grab a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley, five seconds behind the winner,

There was plenty of excitement to come though in the pinnacle event, as the Republic's four golden boys blitzed the field in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay. Schooling set a record time of 179 in the first leg before handing over the duties to Yeo Kai Quan, Pang Shen Jun and Quah Zheng Wen, who never looked like losing.

The OCBC Aquatic Centre erupted as Quah hit the wall, nearly 12 seconds ahead of silver medallists Malaysia. The four embraced before lifting their arms to the stands, a image that cemented why Coach Lopez is so optimistic about the nation's swimming future.

SEA Games netball: Singapore net first-ever gold

SEA Games netball: Singapore net first-ever gold

Singapore beat Malaysia 46-43 in a tense netball final.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's national netballers won their first-ever SEA Games gold at the OCBC Arena on Sunday afternoon (Jun 7).

The seven - Charmaine Soh (GS), Chen Huifen (GA), Nurul Baizura (C), Ang Shiqi (WD), Premila Hirubalan (GD), Kimberly Lim (WA), and led by captain Micky Lin (GK) - beat Malaysia 46-43.

The match saw Singapore leading in the first three quarters - 11-10, 25-20, 36-31 - before a tense final quarter which saw Malaysia pull level at 39 points before Singapore took the lead again.

Goal Keeper Premila Hirubalan said the team took a cautious stance to the court and saw the Malaysian team as strong competitors.

"Even when we are five goals up we said 'No. Take it as zero-zero. We were leading in the start of the game but we said it's not good enough and they're going to come back again. And credit to them, they did. It was a draw and they were up in the fourth quarter," the 32-year-old doctor said.

Team captain Micky Lin attributed the win on her team’s persistence and sticking to the strategy. “Malaysia did really well today," Soh said. They came back really hard on us whenever there was any sort of lead at all and I think our team really steadied and made sure we did the simple things well and I think that’s why we won today."

She added: “At the moment we are Asian champs, that’s why this game was really important for us. And while we are good in Asia, we are trying to go beyond that as well and that’s the World Cup for us a few months from now."

President Tony Tan was at the full-house match with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong.

Dr Tan congratulated the team for their historic win and commended the Malaysian team as well. “The team played well. It’s very close of course, and from time to time we looked a bit anxious but we won in the end,” said Dr Tan.

Thailand and Brunei won the joint-bronze.

Re: 28th SEA Games updates & news

Is Singapore always so good in winning gold for the past sea games, when not held in Spore?
