2 in 3 from NTU hired before they graduate

SINGAPORE - Students graduating from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) this year have ridden the wave of a tight job market, with two-thirds of the record 9,066-strong cohort securing jobs before graduation.

In a preliminary study conducted by the university, it was also found that the top five earners from NTU's Class of 2011 are drawing entry-level salaries of above S$10,000.

Brothers Harry and Henry Zhuang are among the NTU graduates who have secured employment. They have been conferred Digital Animation degrees and will be working in the same company.

"Actually we are quite surprised that the company is going to hire both of us. But (it) ensured that we are going to work on two different projects," said Henry, who graduated from NTU's School of Art, Design and Media.

The NTU's new president, Professor Bertil Andersson, who gave his first convocation speech yesterday, predicts a significant proportion of the university's graduates would be living and working abroad.

The challenge then is to ensure future graduates have a competitive edge in a globalised job market, he said. "I think we've got to change the curriculum to increase communication skills," he said. "Apart from being good mechanical engineers, physicists or biologists, you have to learn social skills, cultural intelligence, because the work market is international."

Prof Andersson noted that many have said Singapore Management University students are much better at communication than NTU students. "I don't know if that's true, but certainly we should make the NTU students better in communication, having more social and international skills," he said.

Prof Andersson also hoped that many graduates would continue with a master's degree or a PhD at NTU. "It is my belief that Singapore needs an increased number of citizens with longer academic education to maintain the countries competitive edge in the globalised knowledge economy and ... develop a nationally based talent pool for university education and research," he said.
