6,000 people sign up for Chinese proficiency test this year

SINGAPORE: The Chinese proficiency test or Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) was cited by Education Minister Ng Eng Hen as an example of a grading system of proficiency levels which Singapore could look into.

According to the HSK centre in Singapore, almost 6,000 people have signed up for the test in the first four months of this year, 20 per cent more than the whole of last year.

HSK is a standardised test to asses the Chinese language proficiency of non native speakers.

Of those who signed up for the test in Singapore, about 70 pe rcent of them are students.

At Pioneer JC for example, about 400 students have applied to take the test this year.

Vanessa Ho, student, Pioneer JC, said: "Certain parts of the exams in JCs are more content based so these are exams which we can study for whereas in the examinations for HSK, it is more on our knowledge of Chinese and the sentence structure. So the difference is that the HSK is more on our basics."

Teo Ting Ting, head of the Mother Tongue Department, Pioneer JC, said: "This exam is a skill based exam and it is not content based so students do not need to do last minute memorising of vocabulary, cheng yu or do ting xie after the exams.”

The HSK exam has six levels.

Students who have passed the first level means they can understand and use simple words and sentences in Chinese.

While those who attain level six are able to express themselves fluently in written and oral Chinese.
