6 orders for $1.5m Rolls-Royce Wraith

6 orders for $1.5m Rolls-Royce Wraith

by Samuel Ee, The Business Times|10 June 2013

Singapore - About half-a-dozen Rolls- Royce Wraith coupés may have been ordered last weekend, but this may not be an indication that ultra-luxury car buyers are returning to the market after February's registration tax hikes, say some motor distributors.

A senior executive at a superluxury dealership, who counts 40-50 per cent fewer enquiries these days, said: "If anything, they are running away at the moment because of the ARF increases."

Another important reason for the waning interest is that many ultra-high net worth buyers who had wanted to buy a car have already done so.

"The Feb 25 cooling measures sparked off a rush to beat the new registration taxes," said the boss of a well-known franchise. "That means many people have been taken out of the market because they fast-forwarded their purchases."

On Feb 25, the government introduced vehicle-financing restrictions that limited the loan quantum to either 50 or 60 per cent of the car price, depending on the open market value (OMV) of the car, with the repayment period capped at five years. But more importantly for the ultra- high-end market, it also announced that the flat Additional Registration Fee (ARF) would be replaced by a tiered ARF structure.

Overnight, a $1.2 million Rolls-Royce Ghost saloon was saddled with an additional $270,000 in taxes. A $1.5 million Lamborghini Aventador suddenly cost $350,000 more to register.

Even as stunned distributors began to revise price lists, they also scrambled to register as many cars before the new rules kicked in. They could do this because the progressive ARF structure applied only to cars registered with COEs obtained through the next new COE tender.

As a result, open category COEs already in hand were in big demand because these transferrable COEs allow for immediate registration. At one point, they were being traded at a premium of as much as $20,000.

To beat the deadline, distributors brought forward future orders, airfreighted advance stock and diverted cars meant for other markets to Singapore.

According to Land Transport Authority (LTA) data, it appears that Bentley saw the most activity post-Feb 25, partly also because of its slightly lower price range vis-a-vis the other marques listed. But March and April were also good months for Ferrari and Rolls-Royce, although the numbers include parallel imports.

So if demand in this segment is supposed to be low, why has the Wraith received such a good response?

The radical Rolls-Royce coupé starts from $1.26 million but costs closer to $1.5 million because of options.

One reason for the good take-up is that it is a brand new model.

Another is that the carmaker has priced it very attractively. Coupés and convertibles usually cost more than sedans, but the basic Wraith and basic Ghost EWB (extended wheelbase) saloons are expected to have a similar list price.

The sales manager of a super sports car brand said: "Despite the good orders for the Wraith, buyers in general are adopting a wait-and-see attitude. They can still afford it, but they feel the pinch. I don't know when they will come back into the market. It will take a while for them to get over it. We just have to wait."
