7 Reasons Why No One Wants to be an Engineer in Singapore

7 Reasons Why No One Wants to be an Engineer in Singapore

BY DANIEL ON FEBRUARY 24, 2016 CAREER

No one wants to be an engineer anymore. Here are the reasons:

1. Low pay.

2. Low prestige.

3. Engineering faculties/departments are dumping grounds. (Whats the cut off point now?) This is the death spiral.

4. Study so hard for what? The skills needed to get high pay are just: ability to speak well, present fluff well, dress well, socialize well, PowerPoint, Excel (the basics) and Google.

5. If things go wrong, its the engineers fault. Think software bugs, train breakdowns, etc. Doing sales, marketing, communications, coordination and general admin (aka management) seems so much easier.

6. Business owners and clients dont expect to pay a lot for engineering solutions and talent. They always say, Lets outsource to overseas. Lets hire the cheaper foreign talent. But they dont say the same thing when theyre looking for lawyers, doctors and bankers.

7. Retired bankers play golf and drive expensive cars. Retrenched engineers drive taxis.

Re: 7 Reasons Why No One Wants to be an Engineer in Singapore

I believe the job prospect of being an engineer is no longer attractive. Many started their career as an engineer, and after 20 years, he may be still an engineer position.

I cannot agree, because I am still an engineer and I love my job. I have been an engineer over more than 10 years and this is my 11th excluding internships and part-time. If I consider my extended family businesses which I helped out for $50 per month since I was 15 years old, I have been an engineering technician promoted to engineer in the industry over 20 years.

In fact, where career progression is concerned, I moved on because HDB lets us do SOHO cheaply. Before I came out, I was a full time consultant on a government-corporate scholarship. The MNC experience is very important because it helps us meet the contacts that we treasure in life. Plus, they helped us save a few tens of thousands of dollars in our CPF just in case. I thought of starting out, I registered with ACRA my own private limited with a virtual office address and in this way I did simple consulting which didn't make me terribly rich, but from an engineer I became a proprietor and entrepreneur.

It depends on your mindset. Some people want the big luxurious house and car, some like me prefer eco friendly projects. I still ride a bicycle to cut down on carbon emissions, besides my grandparents worked in bicycle and tyre shops.

If you are willing to take on flexi engineering roles, I have managed to find other endeavours that give the engineer in me more meaning. Whether you pop by Tzu Chi Eco Awareness Centre at Nylect Industrial Building or check out Bodhi Linux on the internet, these are examples of fringe engineering projects that give back to society subtly.

The titles can change, just as when I graduated from university suddenly JC Physics and Math seem totally wasted, but as we age, these Science & Math keep coming back because banking & arts remain the sort of bubbles that do not always seem as down to earth as science & engineering after all the years of modernisation.

Depending on what kind of industries. If engineers are in high tech industries, then the prospect is very good. I always believe "you will prosper wherever you go, provided you add value"

Re: 7 Reasons Why No One Wants to be an Engineer in Singapore

Hey, thanks for the post. My husband is a mechanical engineer graduated from an Australian University. When he first came to Singapore for work, the pay over here was half of what he was getting paid for in Australia and the funny part was the amount of work was even more in here.

So after a year working there he switched to a different company. To put it in simple words, local companies pay little to engineers but foreign companies based in Singapore pay very well.

So my personal suggestion is find a company that pays well and values your skills.
