Woman dies in freak accident in Geylang school
ONE moment she was walking to work, the next, the metal bracket of an air conditioner had fallen on her.
Seriously injured, she struggled for life for five days in hospital, before she died.
Librarian Sindy Chan Mei Ying was hit on the head shortly after arriving for work at Manjusri Secondary School.
The freak accident took place around 8.15am on 10 Sep.
It is not known how the metal bracket, said to be a cage-like structure, came loose.
An eye-witness told Shin Min Daily News that Ms Chan suffered a severe blow to her head and blood was seen trickling from her left ear.
It happened so abruptly that the librarian had no time to react.
School principal Tay Yang Fern said in an e-mail statement that the librarian was found 'unconscious on the school premises, bleeding from the head'.
The school's staff called for an ambulance immediately and
Ms Chan was taken to Tan Tock Seng hospital. Mrs Tay said the librarian's family was also contacted right away.
FATAL INJURIES
She said the vice-principal, staff members and she herself had visited Ms Chan and her family in hospital on the day of the incident.
They continued their visits for the rest of the week.
Mrs Tay said: 'We have been keeping in touch with the family and praying for them.'
Ms Chan, who was in her 40s, died of head injuries in hospital on Saturday.
She leaves behind a husband and two adolescent sons.
At the wake, her husband would only say that the accident had caused the whole family extreme heartache and sorrow, reported Shin Min.
Ms Chan was a staff of a library management solutions company. She had been employed by the school on a contract-basis.
The school is 'giving full cooperation' to the police, Mrs Tay said.
The police are investigating the incident as an unnatural death.
Mrs Tay said she and some of the staff members paid their last respects to the librarian at her wake.
She said the school observed a one-minute silence yesterday morning as a 'mark of respect' for Ms Chan.
