Ancient or Modern history?

I prefer both. But ancient people are more brave more wisdom.I just finish watching the freedom scene by brave heart.I was surpised that the willam wallace is so brave that he is not afraid of death, when the onlookers shouted mercy he nvr say it he shouted FREEDOM.Very touching.

I think you have a misconception of what communism really is. Communism is fundamentally, as Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines, an ideology advocating the elimination of private property (which otherwise means the overthrowing of bourgeoisie by proletariats - through revolution).

There are a few complex reasons.

Firstly, Marx, who is more or less the founder of communism because of his book, Das Kapital, likened religion to "the opiate of the masses". He thought that people turned to religion only because life seemed so hopeless under the old governments. But once a communist state is established, Marx thought there would be no need to have religion, because we would have paradise on earth.

Secondly, religion (especially in Europe) was associated with the upper classes, and the old order. Priests, bishops, clergymen were part of the aristocratic (or noble) class, which had for a long time led a privileged life at the expense of the poor. Communism is all about defending the rights of the poor and the working class. Since religion was linked with wealth and privilege, it was seen as the enemy.

Thirdly, communist states like the USSR and China actually became dictatorships. Stalin and Mao became obsessed with preserving their power. Religious groups were therefore seen as dangerous, because they were alternative centres of power other than the State. This is true of almost every authoritarian country; religious groups are closely watched, or crushed, because they preach something different from blind loyalty to one's political leaders.

pretty much what la nausee said. there were instances in colonised south east asian countries (as well as india if i'm not wrong) where religions such as islam acted as a unifying force for nationalistic movements. an example would be indonesia, which was colonised by the dutch. religious leaders in indonesia used islam as a unifying factor to obtain power from the dutch. some nationalistic parties like the sarekat islam also used, well, islam, to unite the people, and they were successful until the dutch took measures to weaken them.

whether ancient or modern, there are always brave people

anyway, if u are going to take history just because u were impressed by braveheart etc, reassess your decision

my jc classmate took history solely because of troy the movie, and he failed it so badly that he retained

communism is the most boring thing in history for me because capitalism already stole my heart away, it has always existed in one form or another throughout history
