Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova

By 2039, global warming had caused sea levels to rise and large amount of territory to be lost. As though in response, a mysterious group of warships clad in mist, “the Fleet of Mist,” appeared in every corner of the ocean, and began attacking human ships. In spite of humanity mustering all their strength, they were utterly defeated by the Mist's overwhelming force. All of humanity's trade routes were blockaded by the Fleet of Mist, their political economy was destroyed, and the human race was steadily beaten down. Seven years later, the Fleet of Mist's submarine I-401 appears before cadet Gunzo Chihaya. The humanoid life form that pilots the sub, who should be their enemy, is instead offering her services to mankind.

Re: Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova

Personally, I heartily recommend Arpeggio. There were 2 rather outstanding shows from Fall anime 2013 and Arpeggio is one of them.

First it needs to be said that the show was fully animated in 3D (or CG, computer graphics). Hence action scenes were beautifully and furiously animated. (To animate traditionally, for example, the amazing missile spam would have surely killed the budget). Yet there was none of the wooden character expressions that typically plague anime CG scenes.

The show delivers story and character-wise too. While not all of the mysteries are resolved, a careful viewer would have noted that the key turning point of the war was achieved and winning it would merely be a matter of time. The characters develop consistently to support the story and are also endearing enough for the viewer to invest in their cause and struggles.

Overall, a great show. It's a pity it's not licensed in US yet. I'm waiting to pick up the blu-rays.

More thoughts on the show elsewhere for those interested

Thanks Alastorflame for sharing a comprehensive writing about your thoughts on Arpeggio!

I have only started watching this series recently and already loving it.
From the opening song to the animation and the storyline, they are very compelling and non-cliche!

Most welcome JeForceX! I picked it up because its blu-ray sales were doing very well on Amazon Japan and was subsequently wow-ed by it. Looking forward to your thoughts when you finish. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
