Athletics: Men's relay quartet in race to meet SEA Games mark

SINGAPORE: This is one race the Republic's men's 4x100m relay team do not want to mess up, for at stake is a ticket to November's SEA Games in Indonesia.

The winners of the silver medal at the 2009 Games in Vientiane, are currently in Kobe, Japan, for the four-day Asian Athletics Championships starting on Thursday, with the goal of matching the SEA Games qualifying mark of 40.16sec.

Gary Yeo, Muhammad Elfi Mustapa, Muhd Amirudin Jamal, Calvin Kang and reserve runner Izwan Firdaus Hanif are just 0.36sec short of the benchmark for the Nov 11-22 Games, which will be co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang.

At last weekend's Hong Kong Open, the sprinters ran away with the gold medal in 40.47sec, and officials are hopeful they can up the pace against the continent's best in the Japanese city.

Said relays coordinator Melvin Tan: "This is likely to be their last meet before the SNOC (Singapore National Olympic Council) meet to consider the SEA Games contingent. I'm hoping they meet the qualifying mark or go lower than 40.47sec."

The SNOC selectors are expected to meet on July 22, but national sports associations are normally given a grace period to submit the names of late qualifiers.

Joining the relay team in Kobe will be woman pole vaulter Rachel Yang and 200m runner Dipna Lim-Prasad.

The following athletes and relay team have already qualified for the Games: Elfi Mustapa (100m), Zhang Guirong, Wan Lay Chi (women's shot put), Sean Lim, Edwin Chong (men's pole vault), Zaki Sapari, Timothee Yap (men's 400m hurdles), Mok Ying Ren (men's 5,000m), James Wong (men's discus), men's 4x400m (runners will only be named later).
