Re: Attractions in Penang

Malaysia's 'Pearl of the Orient' carries a natural beauty and cultural splendour like no other place. Its name comes from the Malay translation of betel nut - 'Pinang'. Every year, thousands of visitors come here to experience the unique cultural heritage and scenery. It is also a very cosmopolitan city, perhaps the second busiest in the country after Kuala Lumpur.

Re: Attractions in Penang

Let me list down all you can do in Penang...

Penang is a all-time famous for its food. You can possibly find any type of cuisine you want. However, you may want to try all the local delights. I list down the foods here based on my favorite:

1) Char Kuey Teow - completely different from Singapore style..
2) Wan Ton noodle - again, it differs from Singapore way of preparing
3) Hokkien Mee - or what you call it Prawn Noodle in Singapore
4) Laksa - to differentiate it from Singapore/Southern Malaysia laksa, we call it Assam Laksa
5) Fried Oyster
6) Nasi Kandar - or Nasi Padang in Singapore... you get to try the authentic Indian-Muslim cuisine
7) Cendol - go Penang road and try the famous one... ask anyone in Penang and they can guide you there
8) Kuey Teow T'ng - it is similar to Fish Ball noodle in Singapore but the taste is stronger, remember to try the duck meat version
9) Rojak - you eat the Rojak in Penang, you will not want those in Singapore
10) Lor Mee - again, it is differently prepared from Singapore way.

During the day, spend your time walking around Georgetown, the world heritage site area. The site is big. You can basically spend the whole day walking around the area. There are chinese temples, buddhist temples, churches, indian temples, malay mosque in the surrounding. All worth spending some time visiting. They have rich cultural and historical information. Besides, a lot of Kongsi (clan office) around that area, to name a few Khoo Kongsi, Ong Kongsi, Cheah Kongsi. You can study the architecture and how the community used the Kongsi as part of their communication and social life. Then, there are clan jetties as well. People still live there. Houses built on the sea and you can get the chance to experience how these people live and their bonding is strong among families.

Remember to visit Kek Lok Si Temple, South East Asia biggest Buddhist temple. Whether you are a buddhist or not, the temple will definitely wow you with it great architecture. The temple is built on a hill. From there you can get to see Penang from on top as well.

Penang bridge is also another highlight you may consider marking it as one of your itineraries. One of the longest suspension bridge. This bridge serves as one of the link way between mainland Penang and Penang island for Penangnites. You can consider driving from Penang island to mainland and then take the ferry service from Butterworth back to Penang island. Penang ferry service is also another mode of transportation for Penangnites to travel between the island and mainland. One of the oldest ferry services in the world. Once you onboard the ferry, remember to go the front and you will be promised with a magnificent view of whole Penang Island. The ferry can bring people as well as vehicle.

Batu Ferrighi beach is also another place you may want to visit. The beach does not come with crystal clear water but it provides excellent sunset view. You can also relax yourself on the beach, enjoy a freshly plucked coconut while enjoy the breeze from the sea.

The Thai and Burmese temples at Bangkok Lane. Sorry, their names are hard to spell out. One of the biggest reclining buddha statues can be found there. Make your wish there.

Penang Butterfly Farm is also another well-known tourist spot. The farm was awarded world's best.

Penang Hill. If you find the weather is too hot for you. Travel up to Penang Hill allows you to run away from the heat and noise from the city. Up the hill, you can get a bird-eye view of Penang island. You can also see Penang Bridge from the top of Penang hill. If condition is good, you can look as far as to Butterworth.

Penang Botanical Garden is also another place worth a visit. The garden is built next to virgin tropical forest. It is not as artificial as Singapore's botanic garden.

I am from Penang... if you want more information and guide, feel free to contact me!

The National Park is quite massive and has this really narrow bridge which allows you to walk through the rainforest. One of my more vivid memories being there.

Re: Attractions in Penang

Besides Penang Botanical Garden, visit Penang Youth Park too. It is located at walking distance from Penang Botanical Garden. Lots of pretty girls like me like to have a light sport there, so good luck!

Penang Road Laksa is the most famous Laksa in Penang, but Laksa at 七条路巴刹is voted to be the best Laksa by local. Me myself like Laksa from Air Itam (near Kek Lok Si Temple) and Balik Pulau.

Rojak store at Padang Kota Lama is one of the best Rojak ever...!
