Babies who lack love and stimulation 'at risk of poor brain development'

Babies who lack love and stimulation 'at risk of poor brain development'

Babies who do not receive love and stimulation in their first year are at risk of poor brain development and social skills, a child health expert Dr Cheryl Power has warned.

Published: 6:02PM BST 05 Jun 2009

Dr Power, a clinical psychologist, said that babies of mothers with mental health difficulties could be at risk because health professionals too often focus on the problems of the mother, making the infant 'invisible'.

But Dr Power, who works at Liverpool's Alder Hey children's hospital, told the Royal College of Psychiatrists' annual meeting in Liverpool that this isolated approach could have a detrimental effect on babies' health. She urged health workers to focus on the whole mother-baby relationship.

"The infant needs to be exposed to stimulation and social interaction to enable their brains to develop," said Dr Power.

"Mothers with mental health difficulties are compromised in how they are able to provide stimulation and how they are able to interact with infants. That will influence how a baby's brain develops."

She told delegates that it was necessary to think about the parenting role of mothers with mental health difficulties, as well as their personal needs.

"If the mother can be successful in the social role of being a parent they are more likely to recover from their mental health difficulties and that's going to have a major impact on the development of the infant," said Dr Power.

Re: Babies who lack love and stimulation 'at risk of poor brain development'

it's a fact that many parents didnt know.. that why i always tink it's ridiculous of parent who insist on juz leave baby on their own to train them to be independent.. babies needs to have lots of hugs and kisses.. that's why i never mind carrying my baby whenever she wans.. after all, its only benefits for her...

those babies in orphanage all developes very slow coz they are not stimulated, left to lie in their cots day in day out.. this is very bad for human developments..

Re: Babies who lack love and stimulation 'at risk of poor brain development'

This is true.

When babies don't get what they want,
they cry & cry.
& when they does these, they're only working on their right brain.

It's always better to start teaching them from young, so that there are some activities going on in their left brain.

Our brains are made up of 2 sides - left & right.
The left side is mainly "language", while the right side is "artistic" & "emotional".

Kids who're taught young & given the amount of attention they need are normally not at risk of growing up as an autistic person.
But kids who're neglected (for the first 3 years especially), are more prone to being an autistic person.
