From banker to bartender at 52

From banker to bartender at 52

He gave up his high-paying position in a bank, to pursue his passion in bartending.

Mr Deng Shu Xian, 52, holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and has been in the banking industry for more than 20 years, working at DBS and Citbank.

He admitted that when he was younger and studying in the US, he dreamed of pursuing a career in the F&B industry, but gave up on the idea due to realistic and monetary concerns.

That is, until two years ago, when he felt the time was right and took the plunge.

Said Mr Deng, who is single: "I felt I had earned enough and was financially secure. I didn't have to worry about looking after my mother, so I made up my mind to pursue my dream."

But his 85-year-old mother had a hard time coming to terms with Mr Deng's decision.

After he quit his job, Mr Deng enrolled in a one-month bartending course offered by the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ).

He said: "After my mum found out I wanted to be a full-time bartender, she told me off, saying I had let her down and nagged at me every day not to do it."

Oldest in class

Mr Deng was one of the pioneer students who enrolled in the bartending training programme offered by WSQ and was also the oldest student in class.

Mr Deng acknowledged that he felt the effects of his age most during lessons, when he would forget what was taught soon after class.

He said: "I had to practise the same movement a few times before I could remember them, and revised my lessons when I was on the MRT. I was worried I could not remember all the different bartending procedures."

After the course, Mr Deng eagerly sought work in the bartending industry, but his qualifications and age worked against him.

He said: "I went for many interviews, but was rejected all the way. So I'm surprised why my current boss actually decided to hire me."

Mr Deng has been working at Kazbar, a middle-eastern restaurant and bar, for the last three months. Besides having to work his way up from scratch, he has had to suffer a massive pay-cut.

But Mr Deng says he has no regrets.

Said Mr Deng: "The working environment here is simple, and I'm happier and more relaxed here.

It's unlike my previous workplaces where I often had to deal with office politics, and often fell ill."

So you want to be a bartender?

The WSQ bartending training programme is supported by the Association of Bartenders and Sommeliers in Singapore.

There are 3 modules altogether, comprising 44 hours and 20 mins in class hours. Course fees are $1150.

Under the Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience (SPUR), 90 per cent of course fees may be funded.

Registration dates for enrollment will be held on Aug 10 and Sep 13.
