Is it roller blading?
Try starting with ur feet in a V shape first n dont lean far too back if not u`ll lose ur balance. tht`s pretty scary for beginners.
Thn using 1 foot to push n kp going in a V shape. Once, ur comfortable cn start increasing ur speed.
Haha thts how i learn and am doing fine. Best place to skate is East Coast Park at late evening. Not much ppl anymore so the roads are clear and the ground is more suitable for skating compared to void decks or any pathways. Or you can hold onto a friend's hand n skate together to maintain balance as well as see how he/she skates (:

if u want to learn how to skate well, best is if u found a group of friends who can skate together with. It usually means that u have to find a new group of friends lah, cause its unlikely that ur own friends are as enthu as u are. What i suggest is u join up some skate club; eg. inline culture ( i'm from there heh ) .
try to practice on long stretches of road first, theres no point skating to and fro a void deck, u'll learn nothing. Remember to wear ur guards and don't be afraid to fall down. You can only improve when u dare to fall down ( and this is the reason why most people simply cannot master skating, they don't dare to fall down and hence never learn )

i agree totally with sweetlemon lol! a lot of ppl take very long to learn to skate becuz they are afraid of falling, just wear your guards and ur falls would be GENERALLY painless. where do you stay? i dun mind teaching, since i've some experience teaching ppl how to skate.
disclaimer: i am not certified with any organization as an instructor or anything, so dun sue me if i fail as a teacher =(

Try just going in small distances towards railings with a faster pace than you can control, you should get it in time.

actually i feel going towards railings dun really do anything.. only gives the person some kinda psychological comfort that he/she can grab onto it when unstable/wanna fall.

lol, dejavu.
i dun mind an outing to teach ppl to skate again. tho u must b serious n also if u fall down n injure urself badly must tell us.
otherwise ppl will b turned off frm teaching.
hmm, i dun think the key is to nt b afraid of falling.
i m totally chicken. i hate to fall but if i do, i do. there's no way ard it.
i think the key is to practice n if u really have passion for it, then u 4sure will master it eventually.
which is y i nt doing slides... lol
regarding ecp, yea most of the time u can ask advice frm the skaters there.
they is friendly, but of cos dun bother them if they practicing something.

lol for me i hate wearing guards, so mine are still quite 'new'. I was totally not afraid of falling, had a bad cut once but generally came out in one piece (:
