Beware of phone calls offering zoo tickets

Beware of phone calls offering zoo tickets

WRS added that some people reported the scam to the zoo as they found it odd that the call came from a private number.

my paper

If you receive a phone call telling you that you have won free admission to the Singapore Zoo, do not celebrate.

It is likely to be a scam to steal personal details like your name and identity-card (IC) number.

A handful of people turned up at the zoo earlier this month only to find out that the tickets they had "won" did not exist.

They also learnt that the person who called them did not work for the zoo.

In a statement issued to my paper, Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), which runs the zoo, confirmed that it has uncovered a recent spate of phone scams.

The victims were requested to reveal their IC numbers over the phone in exchange for "free zoo tickets", WRS said in the statement.

Ms Isabel Cheng, director of marketing and communications at WRS, advised members of the public to make a police report if they receive such calls.

The scam came to light after the Singapore Zoo received several inquiries, in person and over the phone, about the free tickets.

WRS confirmed that several people fell for the scam. It added that some people reported the scam to the zoo as they found it odd that the call came from a private number. WRS said it has lodged a police report.

In the scam, members of the public were told over the phone that they have won tickets to the Singapore Zoo, which include entry to a "food festival".

No such event was organised, said WRS.

In the same phone call, potential victims were told to go to the zoo's visitor centre on a specified day and time to collec the tickets.

The caller then asked for each individual's name and IC number.

The Singapore Zoo posted a message on its website yesterday to warn the public about the scam. It advised the public not to divulge personal information to such callers.

I think an official announcement should be made that ANY unknown calls/messages that ask you for your particulars should be avoided at all costs.

It's basically the same tactic as all the others...Don't people learn?

Either they didn't think of so much, or they are simply greedy about the free tickets

I believe the word 'FREE' is good enough for them to think straight.

We Singaporeans are so kiasu. That word alone can cause a huge lapse of judgement.

For this case, it is not about kiasu, since no one is rushing to get something. But, a matter of greed instead

Re: Beware of phone calls offering zoo tickets

It is terrible indeed that people have to use something like a zoo to trick people out of their money and personal information. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
