Broiled pork negi roll recipe

Broiled pork negi roll recipe

Pork and long green onion are a great combination when grilled to a crisp.

Tamako Sakamoto | Yomiuri Shimbun, ANN | Wed Aug 31 2011

On the evening of Aug. 1, our family of six went to a movie theater to watch Goro Miyazaki's latest animated feature, Kokurikozaka Kara.

That day, by coincidence, all of my family members were at home. That was quite unusual because my four children range from primary school to university, and they have been busy with their club activities even during summer vacation.

It was my eldest son who suggested going to the movies because it was the first day of August.

On the first of each month, movie theaters give big discounts, and it is a great opportunity to enjoy movies for a big family like us.

Miyazaki's animation seemed to be a perfect choice for a movie outing with different generations. As we expected, the animation was very beautiful, and we were satisfied with the great work.

We were very hungry when we got out of the theater, so my husband and I wanted to have dinner at an attractive izakaya-style restaurant with private tables that we noticed nearby.

To give us some excuse to have dinner at such a special place, we told our children it was going to be "shoki barai." The word is often used for summertime drinking parties, as it literally means gathering to forget the summer heat.

My younger children did not look happy and urged us not to enter the restaurant. After a while, they gave in, and we sat around the table.

Looking at the menu, I said, "Today is special shoki barai, so why don't we order some drinks?" Of course, I meant soft drinks for the children.

But the younger children shook their heads and seriously said, "We are fine with water."

So, I just ordered some dishes for them. After a short silence, my daughter opened her mouth. "Well, how are you going to pay for this dinner?"

I did not understand what she was talking about. She continued, "Is shoki barai something like ribo barai [revolving repayment]?"

At that moment, I finally understood why the younger children had tried to stop me from entering the restaurant and why they didn't want any drinks.

They didn't know the term "shoki barai." As "barai" sounds like payment (harai), they thought we were going to give them an inappropriately expensive dinner. My husband and I burst out laughing, and the children finally relaxed as we explained.

At the restaurant, we had an interesting dish of grilled whole negi, or long green onion, rolled in thinly sliced pork. The crispy grilled pork and tender negi went very well together.

At my children's request, I have cooked this dish in the oven at home a couple of times already this month. It is also good to substitute zucchini for negi or to cut the vegetable rolled in pork into 4- or 5-centimeter pieces and saute them in a frying pan.

It would be exciting to grill the whole negi on an outdoor barbecue grill, too.

Broiled pork negi roll

Serves four

Ingredients:

2 long negi (long green onions)

200 grams thinly sliced pork

(baraniku)

Salt and pepper to season

(lemon sauce)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

Coarsely ground pepper

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 200 C. Cut off the green part of the negi and trim off the roots. Roll the strips of sliced pork around the negi. Place on a baking sheet and season with salt and pepper. Broil in the oven for 15 minutes, until the pork becomes crisp.

2. To make sauce, combine lemon juice, sesame oil, sugar, salt and pepper.

3. Cut the broiled pork negi rolls into 5- or 6-centimetre pieces and serve with lemon sauce.
