go to both! Mel:
in mel i walked about their town...head over to the tourist information booth/centers whereby they have friendly staff inside to guide you around the better places in mel. these centers are located around mel town.
you can choose to go on day tours (half or full day) with the tour companies there. book here in advance or when you reached there. they depart daily and you can just select and buy the tour package instantly. at least that's what i did. great fun! haha
depending on how long you stay in mel (i did 5 days before moving over to sydney), you can go to their flea/pasar malam style carnival/mkt. forgotten what's the name of the place but it is located at one end of mel city/town. i bought small art pieces, aroma soaps and ate their corns (yummy n sweet).
if you are a beach person, go to bondie beach (spelling wrong ah). they have retail shops for you to shop and yummi-licious pastries for you to ogle or eat...take the trams/trains. Syd:
i went for lots of city shopping and some arts/cultural sightseeing/photographing. i didn't take alot of day tours in sydney but took alot of their public buses to different locations.
have forgotten most places...must dig again to share. hahaaa...
overall, it's simple to walk around or head over to different locations within the city. transport is not an issue. if you're touring around within syd, it is good to buy their 1 day pass or something (similar to a stored value card). this goes the same for mel.
if i am to choose one only, i will take mel over syd. try to go for at least 7 days and above.

haha...i went to 3 locations in aussie land...sorry if i got it mixed up for the places of interest.
imo, the nice sceneries are located in the outskirts of the cities... racerboi added 8 Minutes and 16 Seconds later... Quote:

7 days for australia is not enough...trust me. btw, your 7 days is for one state or multiple states? i went for 21 days for 3 locations - mel, syd and gold coast....
your travelling time will have taken 2 days out of your 7 days. furthermore, there are slight time differences...these are some of the things that you should take note of =)
food is not expensive...at least to me. if you have a tight budget, stick to the less fanciful food like junk food (macdonald's or pizza). their pizza's you should try as the fillings and toppings are generous in proportion unlike sg. in fact most of the food proportions are generous...perhaps we're asians and take a smaller food portions per serving?
to me the food is nice.
PS: don't bother going to chinese restaurants or their food court/kopitiam. it is expensive and not nice.

Both are nice places to go . If u can hop over to Melbourne after sydney, will be nice.
If only can go 1 place, either one can do.
Sydney - u want to see the sydney bridge ,opera house, casinos, the sexy places, Chinatown, walk along the river banks, go to the cliffs - Bondi, etc ; maybe u wanmna to hike in the Park (Blue Mountains); shopping, Food - Chinese , KFC, McDonalds ;
they have a food court in the mdoern buidling at Chinatown , like a foodcourt u see in SG.
Melbourne - Crown Casino , Yarra River, lovely cake shops with the beautiful cakes, the Queen Elizabeth market - full of groceries and wet mkt stuff, Yum Cha at Chinatown, the univesities, the Queen Elizabeth market -- all these at the Melbourne City centre,
-- suburbs with Vietnamese resaturant - delicious food ,
I say both places are good to go to. U will enjoy it. |

Go to both. Melbourne is more European if you ask me and when it comes to food, they've probably got a bigger or better variety over Sydney. However, Sydney's Asian food will definite be better. Sydney has been ridiculesly populated with Asian these days and by saying that I mean you'll find maybe 5-6 out of 10 people are Asian walking in the city. The Japanese food there is very good as well. Google for Masuya Group. They have 3 chains in the city with a different theme each. If you're feeling rich, Sydney also house 1 of the world top 10 or 5 (they were top 10 this year I think, top 5 for the previous years) restaurant, Tetsuya (google for it). Blue mountain is a good place to visit as well with Jenolan cave being the attraction.
Melbourne city is probably the biggest and maybe better for shopping. I find in Melbourne its mainly looking at buildings. If you're happen to be there during or close to winter, maybe dropby snowy mountain to see some snow. In general Melbourne is more of an artistic place over Sydney and depending what you like, you might find 1 better than the other.
Personally I'm more of a nature person which love food. My pick is Sydney if I only have 1 choice. If you have only 7days, maybe just stick to 1. 3 Days for 1 city is not enough. Go online and do your search. Work out your list of want to do and you'll probably find you've got everyday filled up. The drive up to blue mountain is easily 3hours if you're not used to drive mountain roads. So thats probably 1 or 2days for you depending on whether you want to stay for the night. Iwould recommend as the cave tour is 1-2hrs and I would recommend 2 to make the trip a relaxing one, if you have the money, try also the adventure caving which lets you explore harder part of the cave with the pros in jump suit/helmet/headlight and that light is the only 1 you've got.
Been to Sydney twice and Melbourne once. If you feel like saving a little on lodging, try YHA (I think around 100-150 per night for a double room with ensuite). They're a very decent backpackers unless the dodgy ones and best part is they're almost everywhere and very conveniently located.

Melbourne - Queen Victoria Market, nearby Elizabeth Street, on the back of it.
