INSURERS on Friday made another appeal to motorists to help them contain inflated claims.

Seven months after introducing a new rule that requires drivers to report accidents - however minor - within 24 hours, insurers are asking them to have a camera handy while on the road.

If they should be in an accident, they are encouraged to take pictures of the scene as well as the vehicles involved.

'We want to leverage on technology that is readily available today,' said General Insurance Association president Derek Teo.

The GIA reckoned that most mobile phones have inbuilt cameras today.

Unlike the previous 24-hour reporting rule, this is not compulsory. And motorists should take pictures only when it is safe to do so.

'Do not compromise on your personal safety,' Mr Teo said.

The GIA said all 230 accident-reporting centres - which are also motor workshops approved by insurers - will be equipped to download photos from all kinds of devices.

At the centre, motorists will still be required to fill in an accident statement.

The GIA said this will expedite the claims process as well as repairs.

Responding to reports that repairs tend to be stalled whenever a policyholder makes a third-party claim, the GIA had no ready answer.

Mr Pui Phusangmook, motor convenor of the GIA, would only say that motorists should bring such cases up to the GIA.

He said the delays could be because insurers needed time to investigate the claims.

Mr Teo, however, pointed out that even if the insured chose to make an 'own damage' claim - so as to speed up repairs - their no claims bonus would not be prejudiced if he is found to be not at fault.
