Causing a splash: Extraordinary images of droplets of milk hitting water

These extraordinary images have certainly caused a splash - they capture the precise moment a tiny droplet of milk hits water.

Photographer Ashley Sykes spends hours firing the coloured droplets at the water from a bottle suspended 12 inches above - and the effect is a stunning plume of water shooting up into the air.

The 22-year-old from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, uses milk and water tinted with food colouring to give the spectacular effect.

After a lengthy period of experimentation young photographer Ashley Sykes has mastered the art of capturing ink, milk and water splashing

Mr Sykes times the droplets to fall on each other in order to capture the moment of collision.

To capture the precise moment he takes up to 500 shots just to get the one perfect image.

He started shooting the droplets in 2009 after he received a new camera but could not use it outside because of the rain. Instead, he set up a studio in his bedroom using a water bottle he bought from a pet shop.

The weird images show vivid colours and the camera's shutter speed is incredibly high in order to capture the liquid moving

A love heart is captured in this image by the 22-year-old photographer - the pictures capture the precise moment a tiny droplet of milk hits water

With a macro lens he worked out a way to capture the stunning shots without using any photographic trickery.

In one stunning shot, the shape of a heart is captured in a droplet. Sykes used a picture in the background to superimpose the image onto the droplet.

He said: 'I've always loved photos of water and droplets, things we might not see with our own eye. Shortly after getting my camera I started experimenting with droplets.

'The first droplet to hit the water produces a rebound spout, which if you time the rate of flow correctly, a second droplet will hit and produce a collision.

'It took me over 1,000 pictures before getting my very first collision, and after that I have been perfecting my technique.

'I must time myself by eye and click the shutter on the camera at the right moment to ensure I capture the collision, which lasts only a few milliseconds.'

The ghostly images took hundreds of attempts to perfect

Mr Sykes added: 'The lighting and additives used are simply experimental and certainly not all of my pictures go on public display.

'I have varying success rates, and will take perhaps 10 to 500 photos before capturing that perfect image.

'I love perfecting the timing, it's amazing how accurate you can get after some practice using simply your own eyes and brain, especially when you consider they are only there for milliseconds at a time.

'But the end result is what I enjoy most, and having people simply not understand how water can be made to form those shapes.

'I really like showing people something which is seemingly so simple but that with the naked eye you would just never see.'
