China: Animal abuse? China zoo allows visitors to battle tiger at tug of war

This article was contributed by the STOMP Team.

Animal lovers are up in arms against a zoo in China that apparently allows visitors to engage in battles of tug-of-war against the zoo's own tigers.

According to a report The Shanghaiist, photos of a tug-of-war between visitors and an Amur tiger at Changsha Ecological Zoo in Hunan have gone viral online.

Many netizens have condemned the activity, as reported by China News.

Several human vs tiger tugs-of-war were held at the zoo on Friday as a trial of the activity, due to launch during the upcoming National Day holiday.

In order to get the tiger interested in playing the game with humans, a live chicken is placed in a sack tied to one end of a rope, the other end is held by visitors. When the tiger grabs the bag, visitors attempt to wrest control away from the big cat.

Reportedly, a group of seven visitors lost to a four year old tiger. The game costs 45 yuan to participate in.

According to the zoo, the game is designed to help stimulate the animals and avoid potential sickness that can be caused by malaise and inactivity while in captivity. Shows involving animals are prohibited by a 2010 regulation.

As long as it won't hurt them, I believe they would like to battle as well, especially when there's nothing much to do in captivity.

the concept of tug of war with animal is not new as well it is practice in other country so to pin down on only china is rather unfair, beside the animal is not hurt so i doubt it is animal abuse

I don't think playing tug-a-war is not animal abuse. As long as the animal is unharmed, then I think it is OK to do this. If the animal gets hurt though... not good.

yeah i feel that it almost simulates the struggles they will probably go through in the wild where they have to fight with other lions for food. besides, the lion is free to release or stop the tug of war whenever it wants. so it might not be animal cruelty.

How creative of them to think of this game.

I'm sure they could find other ways to entertain the animals, its bad enough that they are in a small enclosure and to have the zoo owners using them like toys is disgusting.

I think the tigers would see it as a game. Idling around for the rest of their lives is worse.

In this case, the tiger's end is the sack with the chicken; as long the animal has the freedom to choose whether it wants to play the tug-of-war or not. If the end of the rope is tied to a part of the animal's body which means that the animal have to play if not will be dragged around like a toy then that is CRUELTY.

^Yeah, if that's true, then it's definitely cruelty. If the animal is being taunted or forced in anyway, it's bad.
