China's Vice President Xi Jinping is planning to visit Japan within this year.
Xi Jinping, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, is seen as a potential successor to President Hu Jintao.
Diplomatic sources say that Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will visit Tokyo later this month, likely on the 19th, to arrange the vice president's schedule.
During his 2-day stay, Yang is expected to meet Japanese senior officials, including Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, in preparation for the vice president's visit.
Both governments see the visit by a new generation of Chinese leader to the recently formed Japanese administration as a good opportunity to promote relations between the 2 countries.
