Commandos finally get their own documentary on Channel News Asia

Commandos finally get their own documentary on Channel News Asia

Public finally gets to see the men of Bravo Company undergo training.

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to feel tired watching men sweat on TV. Again.

Following hot on the heels of the carefully curated exposés in the media the past year of the naval divers from the elite Naval Diving Unit undergoing training, the Singapore Armed Forces commandos finally have their own 12-episode, 30-minute documentary series premiering June 2, 8pm on Channel News Asia.

Called Commandos, the series will definitely be recycling the same old cliches showcasing the trials and tribulations of 250 fresh-faced recruits during their year-long journey to put on the coveted red beret, where the young men will do push-ups, run like they’ve never ran before and carry back-breaking loads as they jump out of planes and question themselves when they face their own mental and physical limits.

This new series has been one year in the making as filming began when the recruits enlisted in June 2014.

The first time a series like this happened was back in July 2010. Called Every Singaporean Son, it was produced by the Ministry of Defence on YouTube. The weekly webisodes depicted what went on in Basic Military Training (BMT) on Pulau Tekong.

Last year, The Straits Times were given access to Sembawang Camp to document the combat naval divers and make them fester in the public’s consciousness before Jack Neo Ah Boys To Men 3: Frogmen hit the movie screens earlier this year in February.

As we speak, Cyberpioneer is running its own 10-part naval diver series online, called Grit, in an attempt to show the public more of what they have seen — but positioned as more real because this is produced by the military.

But will all the commando trainees pass out with the red beret? Or will some of them go out-of-course and become store men?

And will store men also be getting their own reality series in the near future?

Well, time will tell. And if you’re still watching.
