Dare to walk among coffins?

Dare to walk among coffins?

Coffin exhibition a lively draw

By Teo Cheng Wee, Regional Correspondent, The Straits Times | Fri, Apr 30 201
0

30 coffins from all over South-east Asia are creepily displayed at the National Museum of Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR - On a large publicity banner, the word 'coffin' bleeds onto a black background.

It is accompanied by pictures of a skeleton and a mist-shrouded graveyard. And, just for good measure, a replica of a wooden casket is placed by the side.

This is clearly not your typical museum exhibition.

'Coffin Exhibition: Tradition and Mysteries' is the latest creepy offering from the National Museum of Malaysia. It opened on April 1 after three months of preparation and is already set to become a hit.

On display are 30 coffins from all over South-east Asia. These include log coffins, jar coffins and tree coffins used by indigenous tribes in Peninsular and East Malaysia, as well as Malay coffins.

Sections are also devoted to Chinese and Indian coffins typically used in Malaysia. A few others were sourced from Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The supposed star of the show? A modern 14-carat, gold-plated casket worth almost RM400,000 (S$172,000), on loan from a well-known funeral home here.

To add to the atmosphere, these are housed in a dim hall, complete with eerily-coloured lights.

All that seems to be missing is a scream soundtrack.

'We definitely don't see this back home,' quipped French tourist Monica Gerer, 53.

Indeed, supernatural-themed exhibitions have proven to be crowd pullers.

In 2002, a record 500,000 people flocked to another exhibition. The theme? Ghosts.

Queues snaked from the entrance for 200m as visitors jostled for a glimpse of exhibits like a three-month-old foetus.

Other museums have staged similarly well-attended exhibitions with supernatural themes.

They have displayed, among other items, what claimed to be captured genies and a mummified mermaid.

The coffin exhibition, which charges RM2 per entry, looks set to be a blockbuster too.

It is projected to attract 50,000 visitors in its first month - almost double the museum's regular attendance. The exhibition's three- month run could be extended if visitor numbers are good.

'It's challenging to put up a show on a taboo subject. But death is part of culture too,' said Datuk Ibrahim Ismail, the director-general for the Malaysian Department of Museums.

He denied that the exhibition was put up merely for its shock value.

Instead, he felt that it also gave Malaysians a chance to learn more about other races, at a time when Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was preaching a message of togetherness with his 1Malaysia slogan.

Setting up an exhibition with supernatural themes, however, is not without its challenges.

In 2007, an exhibition on ghouls in Negeri Sembilan was ordered to be shut down by the Islamic authorities, halfway into its two-month run.

The National Fatwa Council said the show was harmful to the Islamic faith, after more than 25,000 people had thronged the exhibition.

Mr Ibrahim said the museum avoids these problems by making sure that it presents only established facts, rather than, say, made-up stories about the powers of spirits.

He said the museum has not received any complaints about this particular exhibition.

Visitors interviewed by The Sunday Times seemed to take a positive view of the exhibition.

Mrs Gerer said she appreciates how the exhibition allows her to see what seemed like a macabre topic in a different light.

'It shows we can learn about death in museums too,' she said.

I would love to see something like that. I am a sucker for oddball, novelty experiences. The weirder, the better when it comes to museums, I say!

Re: Dare to walk among coffins?

Oh wow that's new. I for one find it quite interesting. Wonder if other tourists are going to be excited about a coffin exhibit.
