To vamp or not to vamp?

SINGAPORE : It is 2019 and almost everyone has turned into a vampire. Humans are an endangered species and they only have themselves to blame - most voluntarily went vampire for immortality and the result? A dark, blue-toned capitalist world not too different from before, except for glow-in-the-dark eyes, discreet fangs, and blood shots at the local coffee place.

Only problem is the global blood supply is depleting and the few remaining humans have become hot commodity in a blood-starved world. What's a conscience-stricken vampire to do? If you're Ethan Hawke, the tortured haematologist turned bloodsucker against his will, you work doggedly to create a blood substitute for a greedy corporation led by Sam Neill.

Throughout film history, vampire flicks (at least the ones without the R-Patz hair and teen angst) have always been the allegory for societal collapse, capitalist breakdown, fear of the working classes and discrimination. Australian brothers Michael and Peter Spierig's black-comedy schlockfest starts off with such an intriguing premise, and sets up the metaphor for the current economic nightmare. The story-line bursts with clever ideas and concepts, well thought-out and balanced with usual vampire lore and unexpected scare-em thrills. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the execution.

The increasing penchant to explode every vampire, decapitate gleefully and splatter blood and gore everywhere as the M18 movie progresses fits perfectly in my B-grade schlock-horror books - if it were carried out all the way through. "Daybreakers" can't decide if it is tragi-comic-gore-and-guts or a serious parable. To add to the identity crisis, Hawke gives a high-brow dramatically serious performance while the hilariously cheesy Williem Dafoe, as the leader of a rebel human resistance, winks and nudges the audience.

"Daybreakers" ends up being a B movie with A-list pretensions.

nice to see the tables turned in this movie. Now vampires are the dominant species and the humans are the endangered ones

I'm impressed with this movie. It has an original plot (future world dominated by vampires), the suspense kept me at the edge of my seat. There's a lot of great action, although I felt the blood and gore was a bit overdone. Ethan Hawke's acting was great. Best of all, the movie holds true to the rules of vampires: they don't sparkle - they burst into flames and explode with fireworks when they're destroyed

The starting part and the middle of the movie was nice...

Very different form other Vampire movie saw...

Story similar with the movie Resident Evil...

If you are a Fan of Resident Evil you will sure like this...

Just I dun like the ending... too rushing... :-(

I agree with BabyNutz that the starting and middle part of the movie were good. I thought the way they designed the vampire-dominated world was quite cool, the cars with the sun-blocking devices etc. I wish the movie was longer.

But yes I don't like the ending too. It was super violent but I actually felt like laughing when I saw it. And also the stupid bats that suddenly fly out...so cheesy..

this movie is not bad. jus tt i got shocked too many times throughout the movie. lol.

After watching this movie, my mindset changed totally towards vampires. Initially, i thought vampires was those evil blood sucking creature. But this movie portrait the vampires as both good and evil! which is rather unusual.

Im not a "Twilight" person, so please dont tell me tt "Twilight" also potrait good vampires.

I think you never watch Discovery Channel bah... They say Vampires are ppl having Tuberculosis... :-) But the movie I dun think they suffer form Tuberculosis lah... Maybe some sort of Virus...

yea.. i never watch discovery chn.. thx for telling me that.. but aint the vampire in the movie are ppl whom are alrdy dead? cos there are part whereby they use the machine to test for the vampire heartbeat.. but the screen shows the horizontal line instead of the zig zag line..
