Descriptive Essays

Usually in English tests, I would choose to write the narrative compositions. Unfortunately, according to my teacher, Cambridge is slowly drifting away from narrative topics. The 'hotter' kind of essay will be descriptive essays (usually on personal recounts).

My teacher have given me "Unfair Incident" as a topic. I've submitted it but she said that it was more of a narrative story.

I am unsure of how to write descriptive essays and decided to seek for pointers here.

Help please?

Re: Descriptive Essays

I am not really sure but usually for this, the introduction is usually "when?" and "why?".

Re: Descriptive Essays

From what I see, descriptive essays are more like focusing on an experience/memory (in your case, it is the unfair incident)

You can imagine that the unfair incident happened to you and using the when-why-how-where probably helps too. Descriptive essays are somehow like writing a very detailed blog entry. You have to describe whatever happened. (whatever you see, hear, taste, etc) A good descriptive essay is one which manages to make the reader to experience what you experienced.

You can check up internet for resources, look up guide books or ask your teacher. She should guide you in this. Anyway, here is a good guideline that I checked up:

http://www.custom-essays.org/essay_t...ive_Essay.html

Here are some examples:
http://ftp.ccccd.edu/andrade/1301/examples.htm

Look at the examples and compare with your narrative essays. You should see some differences. Hope this helps!

Re: Descriptive Essays

Descriptive essays are littered with lots of imagery and as the name suggests, descriptions. These are the prose which are typically described as 'flowery prose' or 'purple prose'. You take your time describing the subject at hand (Eg: "Her hair was waves that glisten in the summer sun", instead of just "Her hair was curly"). But that doesn't mean that descriptive essays can't be narratives, or vice versa - I think that's where the confusion comes from. Using analogies, a purely descriptive essay is like an elaborate oil painting (detailed, but static), while a narrative is more akin to a motion picture.

Haha, my personal advice would be to do what you do best, but then again, it's still good to be experimenting at this point.
