If you're a fan of games like Halo or World Of Warcraft, District 9 will light your senses.
Directed by Neil Bonklamp and produced by Lord Of The Rings' Peter Jackson, the relatively low-budget, US$30- million ($43-million) sci-fi movie distinguishes itself from the pack with a first person perspective gamers will be familiar with, as dramatic scenes play out one after another with much blood and gore.
But District 9 isn't your average shoot-'em-up alien flick. It features a spaceship and extraterrestrials, but it's also an allegory about segregation. Aliens land on Earth but they're not here to blow up national monuments like they usually do in blockbusters - these guys are refugees.
Tasked with removing the aliens - referred to as "Prawns" due to their appearance - from an African township known as District 9, a mercenary corporation is hired to make the alien warfare work, with no regard for their welfare. When one of the corporation's field operative contracts a mysterious virus that changes his DNA, he becomes the most wanted man in the world.
Bonklamp utilises mockumentary footage and real news clips, adding a dimension of reality to the M18 movie and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. But if you are looking for catharsis, don't rush just yet. Undeveloped characters and loopholes left this reviewer unmoved during the crucial "hero" scene.
Great special effects but perhaps Bonklamp could have taken a cue from Jackson's picaresque movies rather than the "shock and awe" approach of District 9.

| Re: District 9 I just watched it today. It has a lot of bloody / gore scenes & some foul languages used which arent good for kids. No wonder it's M18.
It's definitely the best alien-themed movie ever so far !!!
I'm so sick of typical Alien as enemy, Human is the good guys or the typical Alien vs Humans / Earthlings. It's too common & boring.
This one is very different, you'll feel pity for the aliens more than the humans in here. They show the selfish + greedy sides of human who are always craving for making profits / money. Though there is a human that you'll feel pity for.
Overall, it's worth to watch, totally !!! | | | | | Re: District 9 ... uh, whats this show about? roughly, i just dont see the hype... | | | | | | Member reviews | | Entertainment | | 4 | | Plot | | 4 | | Acting | | 2 | | Overall | | 3

| Re: District 9 I personally find its worth to watch it in cinema. At 1st I also not impressed by the trailers at all, the idea / main concept of the story is also pretty simple.
But the way the make it half way thru the movie looks like taken by some reporter camera, or some sort of documentary film with interview & all that is very interesting.
The most interesting part is where humans are "bullying" the alien by not letting them go back to their mothership but instead taking away all their guns / weapons to check the alien's technology to make profits...where usually in typical alien movies, humans is the victim of medical experiments & violence, but this time aliens are the victim. | | | | | Re: District 9 its M18 right? too bad i cant one more year to go | | | | | | Member reviews | | Entertainment | | 3 | | Plot | | 4 | | Acting | | 2 | | Overall | | 3

| Re: District 9 the movie is ok.
jus the ending is abit..weird
when he ask him to wait for 3 years for christopher to come back
if u notice the movie is abt the real things happening.. | | | | | Re: District 9 very interesting movie. Not da typical alien kind where they start killing humans and blow up buildings..feel sorry for da fellow-turned-prawn..he deserved better..=D | | | | | Re: District 9 I does not understand the story. Just asleep when watching it huhu.

| Re: District 9 the story is pretty simple to understand actually | | | | | Re: District 9 i tot it was action when i bought the ticket to watch this
this is more of like telling what might happen if aliens really came to earth and this might b one of the outcome and how the mistreated some people are.
however one thing that is very amazing about this show the way the fitted the aliens into the movies like i know it's 3d but it's fits so nicely into the movie picture man that's some top notch stuff | | | | | Re: District 9 a nice movie i find .Not a typical alien you would find in normal alien show. it's been depicted in a documentary manner making the movie as real as it gets to our everyday life. it's perspective is not about alien . but about the human nature.
Greed( alien are not only being confined for their weaponary but also for medical experiments),
selfish( each man for their own, they only help when it's beneficial for them and they turn their back on you),
violence(needless to say),
naive( they thought they can manipulate the alien or even harvest their power)
Weak ( feel threaten by the presence of higher power and retaliate by either elimination or force submission)
In summary it's a nice movie, not too much of gore i think just abit disturbing as it make you think that this may actually be happening.
