Drag Me to Hell

Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan.

Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.

In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: how far will she go to break free of the curse?

Toilet Roll Back to the basics horror from director Sam Raimi

Back to the basics horror from director Sam Raimi
By Alicia Peter | Posted: 10 June 2009 1003 hrs

RATING: 2.5 out of 5

SINGAPORE : Director Sam Raimi returns to his roots in the horror genre with his latest movie “Drag Me to Hell”. Fans of his previous works of fright will be in for a treat as Raimi shows a clear return to his “Evil Dead” (one of his earlier film projects) roots.

Alison Lohman plays Christine, a bank loan officer who is very close to snagging a promotion.

In order to secure that promotion, she turns down the pleas of the old Mrs Ganush (Lorna Raver) for an extension on her eviction notice.

Little does Christine know, she turned down the wrong old woman who places a very powerful curse on the paper-pusher, damning her to hell in three days by one of the most feared demons.

Much like the “Evil Dead” series, “Drag Me to Hell” carries a kind of in-your-face slapstick element, and manages to be funny and frightening at the same time.

It is also more shocking and one of the more insanely gross shows to hit the cinemas in a long time, with buzzing flies and weird gunk spewing from old Mrs Ganush. So don’t watch this anytime near meal-time.

The movie also serves a good reminder not to be mean to any little old ladies.

One of the most memorable scenes is undoubtedly the smackdown between Christine and the initially helpless and frail, Mrs Ganush.

Credit goes to Raimi who is probably the only person to date who has succeeded in pulling off a blonde chick vs granny face-off which is not only entertaining, but somewhat comical as well.

While this is not necessarily one of the best horror flicks to hit the cinemas in recent years, it’s definitely a breath of fresh air from Raimi, given the usual fare of horror films with flimsy storylines that revolve around blood, gore and sex.

Raimi’s talent is undeniable.

Viewers who are not die-hard horror film fans may find it a little harder to appreciate Raimi’s work after the "Spiderman" trilogy. On the other hand, this movie will definitely have hardcore horror flick fans screaming... for more.

this is a good movie, according to notable people and the general public. apparently, the reviewer is not appreciative of it to give it 2.5 stars.
