"English more important, Chinese can Throw Liao", tis is wad one of my gd fren say...
jus bcoz english is far more important in sg, then we can throw away our mother tongue! in my opinion, if u r a chinese, its like a disgrace if u dunno ur own mother tongue language...... somemore my fren is frm a china family! he is borned and lived in sg but his parents r china ppl!(he failed his chinese badly)
WTH! n hu say chinese nt important also?

i think that nowadays too because my chinese teacher don't really teach us much. and he's practically joking/making fun of people every lesson...
but well, both languages are equally important..
knowing more language is a bonus!

ask your friend to shut up...what a big disgrace for the more than 1.3 billion Chinese in this world !
we need Chinese because China is rising currently and will become a superpower next time and if we go China for work, cannot speak Chinese, then bye bye for you...even Westerners are learning Chinese too...so i dont see any reasons for Chinese people not learning Chinese or hate Chinese...

Well.. I agree. It's not just Chinese. Even Malays, when interviewed, will keep giving answers in english when asked in malay. It's quite a disgrace when you can't even speak your "native?" language.
However, I'm a bit hesitant about using exam results as a gauge. From what I've heard, Chinese Language is a difficult subject to study for when it comes to exams. Personally, I believe that the most important is that you should at least know how to speak your language properly and fluently. Some parts of the exam (idioms, for example.. even in the malay paper) is not really necessary in your daily life.

In addition.. You should know how hard it can be for Malays and Indians to look for work when a lot of job ads that we see have the following: "Must be able to speak English and Mandarin"

ACTUALLY NOTHING IS DIFFICULT AS LONG AS U ARE WILLING 2 LEARN

这阵子我还去加强我的方言程度。。。

To me is chinese. I love chinese. I prefer talking in chinese , listen in chinese than english lo. English my pronouciation donno like wad. Too bad at here everything is in english,no english cannnot survive. if sg is like tw and hk, den ho sey liao.

lol. english more important meh, i think otherwise lol. i speak mandarin more in my school also, cos its easier. like lol, ppl say chinese/ mother tongue only for examinations like O levels.

I'm part chinese with thai and baba plus german...I do speak a lil' bit of chinese and german and english... but that doesn't mean I have to be able to speak thai as well just because it's in my blood...
I think the only reason why Singapore education system is encouraging English more than mother tongue is because they see the importance of being able to communicate with a VERY international language, that being said your mother tongue be it chinese or what ever, is also important to a certain extent. So if you find that you feel chinese to be important then do learn it.
