Somehow whenever I hear people say that MT is not important at all, it makes me feel so shame of them .. Those people are not grateful to the ancestors who created Chinese as a language

Ironically, most people think of not knowing chinese as a disgrace, but as a good thing acting a chinese dumb person.

They feel more honoured of saying, "I don't know how to speak chinese" to show others that they are more English-speaking.

Actually the more languages you know the better!
I know English, Chinese and Thai(Only speaking-wise. Can't read or write Thai)
Anyways, should not throw anyway Chinese.
Coz next time grow up as you know, the market in China is dam big.
So if you can speak Chinese, it's an advantageto those who can't.
Just my thoughts.

I prefer to continue learning chinese and speaking it fluently, cus afterall, a chinese is a chinese, its just like u are u, no one can change u.

And now with America forever holding on to its ever-enlarging debt, I would now learn to stick my leg in another giant ready to pull my leg out of america if there is this need someday.

Frankly speaking, back in my adolescent years, I used to hate studying the chinese language. Partly because I could never do well in it and my family and extended family are English orientated, even my grandma (rest her soul) speaks fluent english to her grand children. The only other language that was used was probably cantonese. Which I can proudly say that I understand when someone is conversing in that dialect, but personally having a conversation in cantonese is another matter all together.

As I was saying, yes I used to hate the chinese language. I barely managed to scrape a B3 during my O levels only with private tuition for that. Oh my English scores were only an A2 mind you. I guess languages were never my strong point. When I started to do part time jobs and be exposed into the working society I found that my severe lack of grasp of the chinese language is actually a disadvantage to me. That's cause there are still many Singaporeans who feel more comfortable speaking in their mother tongues ( the working class generation). And to be able to converse with them in their comfort zone would give you a leg up in any working evironment.

But I would like to emphasise a point here. Yes the chinese language is important. However, in Singapore, it would probably work in your favour to have a good command of english with flawed chinese rather than the other way around. Personally I can't speak my mother tongue without sounding funny. And don't even get me started on writing or reading.
But I don't find myself ashamed about it because of my upbringing.

Although the China's the next super power in the global economy. The current global economy is English orientated. Obviously it would be wise to take up the chinese language to be able to take advantage of market there. However you have to realize that they are doing the exact same thing. Alot of the graduates there are taking up the english language to compete in the global market.

I do not think the world will change the international language of communication to suit the upcoming of one country.

On a side note. I get very annoyed with service staff here from the mainland that doesn't understand english. I mean, come on, employers should take note that they ARE SERVICE stafff. Don't employ them just cause they are cheap labour, employ them only if they can actually SERVICE the customers.

sadly, the working generation, younger ones, are using English for communications liao...left those 30+ 40+ and above de using Chinese or dialect during work...
