Both are important to me, is just that all my schoolmates speak english, no chance to speak chinese at all. im in a english-medium school thats why

mandarin is important..i realize it when i was in the same class where 80% are china people...
in other case...malay people talk english? sure thats good...
malay language is a waste to learn..just eats up your brain memory  ...and it is not recognize everywhere xcept southeast asia...and only good for casual talks..nothing else.

First its all abt Singapore Education System. Those who did not did well in English will know. I flunk my chinese since Secondary Sch. Im not ashame of myself and dont find it disgraceful at all. I speak English in sch, speak dialect at home. I dont come into ctc of chinese very often even though I dont come from English educated family. I can speak Chinese but cant read and write well. Everyone has their strength and weakness. There is no need to call pple a disgrace on someone weakness.
How many pple can speak their own dialect. So if they cant speak, their also a disgrace? Its just simply they dont come into contact of the language often tt why they are not good in the language.

I think that both are equally important. You really have to be able to at least converse fluently in both.
Even if you do not intend to use Chinese/speak Mandarin on a regularly, the fact is that people, even foreigners, will look down on you if you turn your back on your mother tongue. It's just a matter of nationalistic pride.

my chinese teacher aka form teacher used to show us slam dunk during chinese lessons.. 
but we got test on the subtitle on that episode..
they way he used is very innovative and good.. 
chinese is not really impt now but it might in a next couple of years...
