English helps you get around internationally. But please, do not neglect your Mother Tongue.
Being Bilingual is the best way to go. If you can learn more languages, that's a good thing.

Youngsters in singapore is just throwing their mother tounge away....Everywhere i go is english, english and still english...Even people of the same race speak english...Personally, i feel that the reason for this is that English speaking families is on a rise, while chinese ( mother tounge ) speaking families is getting lesser and lesser. I myself is born in a chinese speaking family as my parents are both chinese educated although i am born in the late 80s... Due this this reason, i already used to the chinese speaking environment....People now for what reason i don't know why, see the chinese language as " low class" , " never study " ...They will refer to people like myself, who speak chinese, read chinese papers, etc... as never study one... Once i was reading the chinese papers at some place, a mother told her child this " Don't be like him, never study one" and saying loudly in english and i was the only one there...She was obviously refering to me...She is a chinese too...I myself like the chinese culture of its long history whereas, the english culture for i don't know how many years only....like no history like that ( no offence to people who belong to the english culture )...And i don't know why the chinese now want to throw away their own culture and go for some foreign ( english ) culture...

i feel a bit 'used' at times when frens dun wan speak chinese wif me....to make matters worse, one of my chinese speaking contacts like to use fake ang moh accent when speaking to me in english....

Lindtt:
yes..german is harder than english pronunciation, and sentence structure wise the spelling makes way more sense then in english though....french is harder than german due to the fact that is has more femme, homme and neutral terms for objects...chinese is actually quite a basic language, it's the writing that is tough to catch on without practice same with the pronunciation aka pinyin.
What ever languages you have, it's great, but now that we live in an international age, we have to try to keep informed and take in both english and our one of our MT, or a few of our MTs. Even if it's just understanding.
Sooner or later the world will have to create a Universal language meaning that every country will have a language that we can all converse in, so that there are less misunderstandings globally. Right now it seems to be English that is winning in the race of linguistics and litteracy. Chinese (mandrin) is catching up. As for the other dialacts in the chinese culture It will be very difficult as there are many out there and most are dying out due to the fact that most of the people who know it live in tribes, or are of the aging population and the dialect is being weakened by the years of change in language in education and environment.

You won't want to know how many strands of hair I lost while studying the 詞語手冊 during A levels. I thank God that I still had some hair left to shave when I went for BMT.

IF Singapore Need To depend more on English Speaking country then maybe we can throw chinese .
Problem is , even USA , need to depend china on business ?
If you don't know chinese then you will have lesser money to earn.
Important :
Doesn't you felt abit disgrace whereby you have chinese blood but you don't know how to speak chinese but the USa , Japan know how to speak chinese ???
Speaking bad is abit problem but more serious problem if you doesn't even know how to speak or listen ~
I had a chinese friend like that =.=
