english O level help..please help

I'm taking my O level english next monday and i have a a few questions...firstly how do i answer certain comprehension questions??? whenever i do compre, i would be kind of confident about my answers and they would mostly turn out to be wrong and whne my teacher goes through the answers, i would think to myself " y did i not thought of that!!!" or " How could i have left out that point"...so how do i make sure i fully understand the question and give the examiner what they wanna see???

one mroe thing..for situational writing, how do i score for tasks fulfillment? i always do badly for that segment even though i feel like i had done all the question has asked me to...

i only got a B4 for my prelims and i wanna get an A2 for my O levels, my teacher says i most probably can do it but i got no confidence need help

Re: english O level help..please help

Please define the 'certain' comprehension question
Is it 'use your own words', inference type or???

For situational writing, try to be convincing and creative (depending on what the situation is).
Make sure your format is correct to avoid losing marks.
Try to have a wide range of vocabulary so you don't end up using the same words over and over and lose marks in the 'language' section.
E.g. if you want to say 'happy' don't keep using 'happy'. Use 'glad', 'overjoyed', 'elated', 'ecstatic', 'euphoric', etc. and use a different one each time.

P.S. I'm also having my O levels this year jiayous!

Re: english O level help..please help

O's next yr, but I'll try to help anyway :o

For situational writing, do not just list the points that have been given to you in the question.

Eg - Proposal:

Your principal has asked you, the President of the School Committee, to select 1 of the following courses for the upcoming annual camp.

A:
- $75 per group
- Water activities

B:
- $90 per group
- Land activities

To score, you need to elaborate on the given points and not just plainly state them (ie A is cheaper than B, therefore, the committee has selected A). Go on to expand on the basic ideas that have been provided - Eg, this would aid those whose families are financially burdened during this economic downturn...etc

And, remember to vary your vocab too. Watch out for grammatical errors & spelling mistakes.

A decent proposal w/ 2-3 main pts + 1 rebuttal should yield about 23+ marks. Good luck!

usually its inferrence questions...those " explain fully what the author means..." or " why did the author use the words..."

Re: english O level help..please help

For proposal no need to elaborate all the points? Do we need to exaggerate a bit to convince them ?

Re: english O level help..please help

It's best to elaborate so as to score a higher grade in the Task Fulfillment section. 2/3 main supporting paragraphs + 1 rebuttal should earn at least an B+/A- grade in this section

The rebuttal is essential if you wish to score a good grade.

As far as 'exaggeration' is concerned, just come out with solid arguments backed up with elaboration and vary your vocab. There's no need to write a script for Korean dramas.

All the best! (:

Depends on the question. Rebuttals are required in mainly proposals to score a good grade.

Eg:

Your CCA teacher has asked you to plan holiday activities for the class. Three organizations that are viable are A, B and C. Write a proposal to suggest your preferred choice.

A:
- 10 days
- $50 for a group of 5
- Dinner is catered

B:
- 5 days
- $70 for a group of 5
- BBQ dinner by the beach

Say, for example, you wish to suggest A to the teacher - write 2 reasons (with adequate elaboration!) on why you have selected it and 1 reason (the rebuttal) on why you didn't select B instead (with elaboration too!)

The rebuttal is usually about the negative points/downsides of the other given option. Is it too expensive? Does the course last too long? Safety hazards involved? Etc

If you have sufficient time, you can vary the number of paragraphs to write. Eg 3 reasons + 1 rebuttal

JY!
