Singapore River gets a new travel buzz

SINGAPORE - A new taxi service - on the water - may not only make traffic jams a thing of the past for Formula One revellers this weekend but may herald a sign of things to come.

River cruise operator Ducktours began its Bumble Bees on Saturday and, for $3 to $9, Singaporeans and tourists can beat toll gantries and peak-hour cab surcharges by hopping onto the black-and-yellow boats between the Jiak Kim jetty and the Esplanade.

The four 24-seat electric boats take 12 minutes to get from Clarke Quay to the Esplanade and 18 minutes to the Singapore Flyer. Passengers can also request to head to the Marina Barrage from any Ducktours or Hippo River Cruises river kiosk. For return water taxi rides, Ducktours' prices range from $5 to $15.

Ducktours marketing communications manager Sylvia Ng said it had hoped to launch the service as early as mid-May but a change in the vendor constructing the boats caused the delay. "We're glad we're ready for (F1)," she said.

Fellow river cruise operator Singapore River Cruises charges $4 to $12 for taxi rides along Grand Copthorne Waterfront hotel and Merlion Park.

Demand is expected to rise in the coming months when the boat kiosks at Marina Bay Sands are completed but, for now, the Singapore Tourism Board said two operators are "sufficient".

The STB, however, plans to have "more differentiated water boat services to enhance the experience of visitors to the Singapore River and Marina Bay", said its precinct development director Andrew Phua.

Ducktours expects an even mix of tourists and locals to be attracted to its distinctive Bees, which have "Water Taxi" emblazoned on their sides and will operate from 9.30am to 10pm.

Some residents near the Singapore River welcomed the service. Mohd Sultan resident Maryam Menon, 28, said: "I'd take it if it was convenient enough."

The lawyer, who works at Raffles Place, alternates between a half-hour walk and taxi rides. The latter costs up to $15 during peak hours, she said.

Should demand rise, the larger 35- to 55-seat Hippo cruise boats could be deployed as taxis, said Ducktours' Ms Ng.

Indochine boss and nightlife veteran Michael Ma called the river taxis a "fantastic idea" but said: "Eventually, they need to talk about a (river) bus service, with scheduled drop-off every 15 to 20 minutes. It would be even better for the environment because then you'd be moving the masses, and people don't have to crowd the roads."
