Ex-Liverpool captain Gary McAllister's the man for new Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier

Gerard Houllier has identified Gary McAllister as the man he wants to be his assistant at Aston Villa.

The new Villa Park boss is hoping to recruit his former Liverpool skipper to help him after being turned down by three other candidates for the post

As revealed by Sportsmail last week, Houllier is keen to resume his relationship with McAllister, who became a pivotal figure during his time at Anfield.

The Scot is currently working alongside Gordon Strachan at Middlesbrough, but with the former Celtic chief coming under increasing pressure following the Teessiders' poor start to the season, he may be allowed to leave.

Strachan offered the man he made skipper at Coventry City a route back into the game after he was sacked by Leeds United but it is unknown whether McAllister will be allowed to join Houllier.

He had a base in Leicestershire until recently but has since relocated his family to Yorkshire to cut down on the commute to Middlesbrough's training base at Hurworth.

Houllier has turned to McAllister because the other man thought to be in contention, Dietmar Hamann, has decided he wants to continue his playing career for as long as possible with MK Dons.

With Patrice Bergues, Kevin MacDonald and Phil Thompson having already ruled themselves out of the running, Houllier could do with making a swift appointment.

Villa will be under MacDonald's charge against Stoke tonight. Houllier will not be present with the caretaker continuing his role at least until their home game against Bolton next weekend.

Houllier insisted yesterday he has no problems working with the players he has managed previously who are now key figures at Villa.

Defender Stephen Warnock and keeper Brad Friedel were with Houllier at Liverpool but did not receive many opportunities.
Houllier said: 'Everybody thinks that when a player leaves a club, it means they are unhappy. 'At Jamie Carragher's testimonial last weekend, I came across a few players that had left during my time there at Liverpool. There was not a problem and there will be no problem with the people here. We can work together.'
