Expressway Familiarisation Ride course compulsory for learner riders

SINGAPORE - Starting from today (June 1), those learning to ride motorcycles must attend a compulsory Expressway Familiarisation Ride (EFR) before they can obtain their Class 2B licence.

Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Transport Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim announced this at the launch of Singapore Ride Safe 2013.

He said the 100-minute EFR course, which was previously offered as an optional module, will help new riders to better manage the demands of riding on expressways.

The riders will be taught the correct techniques to accelerate and decelerate in and out of expressways, change lanes and overtake other vehicles.

He also said five more locations at residential areas - in Ang Mo Kio, Jurong West, Sin Ming Road and Bukir Merak Central - with a high proportion of elderly residents will soon have “LOOK” markings.

These markings are already at some zebra crossings in Singapore, at Telok Blangah and Jurong East, to remind pedestrians to look out for traffic before crossing.

He added that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has also received some feedback from the community that there have been instances where right-turning vehicles at signalised traffic junctions are not giving way to pedestrians crossing the road.

LTA has placed “Give Way to Pedestrians” reminder signs at some signalised traffic junctions to remind motorists that it is important to look out for pedestrians when making a turn.

They are at Rivervale Lane and Hougang Avenue 4.

LTA said it will evaluate the effectiveness of these new signs and see if such signs can be implemented at more junctions island-wide.
