Fandi: It's been an up-and-down season for LionsXII

Fandi: It's been an up-and-down season for LionsXII

By Afifah Ariffin | Goal Singapore | GOAL.com

A stunner by Faris Ramli in the 66th minute secured the LionsXII a place in the Malaysia Cup tournament next month, as the Singapore side restored a modicum of cheer to an otherwise forgettable league campaign on Wednesday night.

Facing T-Team FC in Kuala Terengganu, the LionsXII eked out a slender 1-0 win in their final league game to condemn their opponents to relegation, after the latter went down to 10 men early in the second half.

Fandi Ahmad was satisfied with his side’s performance, although he admitted that the red card against T-Team custodian Shahril Sha’ari gave them a lucky break.

“We welcomed back Zulfahmi Arifin who controlled the midfield, while Raihan was helping out [the defence] and I thought the back four did a superb job [in marking] the two strikers,” he summarised.

“The most important thing is that the fighting spirit was there, although we were a bit lucky with the red card.”

Reflecting on his season in charge of the Lions, Fand acknowledged that it had been a relatively inconsistent season for the Singapore team.

“It’s been up and down for us, occasionally we play good attacking football but defensively we suffer because we don't finish the chances,” he explained. "Every game we get four, five good chances but we only score once and sometimes not at all. The defenders [will then] get frustrated and lose their focus and confidence at the back."

Looking forward, the LionsXII will look to start with a clean slate as they prepare for their Malaysia Cup campaign.

“We are happy to be part of the Malaysia Cup, which is a prestigious tournament and there's big history,” revealed the former Singapore international, who has had his fair share of good memories in the tournament back in his playing days.

“The important thing is to stay focused and hopefully we'll get goals and luck.”

On the other end, Titan coach Azraai Khor was a dejected man after his team's campaign ended with relegation.

*“To me, there is nothing to be blamed, we tried our best,” he said. "The only thing is that it was very bad to play with 10 men, and missing out on the opportunity to stay in the Malaysia Super League."

“It has been a bad season, players have been performing in a yo-yo, not consistent [manner] and [we fumbled in] the last two games against Perak and PKNS.

“A draw would have allowed us to remain in the Super League, but this is football. But I do think the whole thing is because of the red card.”

And I think that's why Singapore soccer can't make it to the World Cup.
