First capsule hotel in Shanghai opens

First capsule hotel in Shanghai opens

China follows capsule hotel trend amid travel boom

AFP - Tuesday, January 11

SHANGHAI (AFP) - – China has followed Japan's lead in the capsule hotel market, amid an explosion of leisure travel in the world's most populous country.

The first capsule hotel in Shanghai opened at the weekend, less than a month before the Spring Festival holiday, when hundreds of millions of people crisscross the country to celebrate Lunar New Year with their families.

The hotel has 68 cabinet-sized rooms imported from Japan -- where capsule hotels originated -- each equipped with a power point, clock, light, television and wireless Internet, the China Daily said.

The men-only hotel charges 68 yuan ($10) for 10 hours or 88 yuan for 24 hours, the report said, citing Ta Zan, who owns the hotel and used to work for capsule hotels in Japan.

"This is a huge bargain compared with other budget hotels in Shanghai," Ta, 33, was quoted saying.

The report said the budget hotel near the Shanghai Railway Station was the first capsule hotel in China to be built to international standards.

No one at the hotel could immediately be contacted for comment.

China's booming tourism industry was expected to host 2.1 billion domestic and international travellers in 2010, an increase of 12 percent over the previous year, according to previous industry estimates.

Yes, similar to Japan's capsule hotel.

Re: First capsule hotel in Shanghai opens

Singapore should have one too due to the limited land constraint

Shanghai capsule hotel deemed a fire hazard

Shanghai capsule hotel deemed a fire hazard

Fire authorities say it would be too difficult to evacuate people living in capsule hotels in a fire.

AFP | Fri, Feb 25 2011

SHANGHAI - A JAPANESE-STYLE capsule hotel in downtown Shanghai has been shut down over safety concerns, the city's fire authorities said on Thursday.

'What is popular in Japan is not necessarily suitable here. I would not say it was illegal, but the capsules are just unsafe and not suitable for a hotel,' a Shanghai fire department spokesman told AFP.

'You are free to have a capsule-like room in your own home. But when it comes to public facilities, you have social responsibility and have to consider safety issues,' he said, without giving further details.

The spokesman confirmed fire authorities issued a notice on Wednesday denying the hotel approval for operations as it would be too difficult to evacuate people living in capsule hotels in a fire, which could lead to numerous deaths.

China has ordered a nationwide overhaul of fire control measures after a blaze at a Shanghai high-rise killed 53 people in November and highlighted the country's chronic problem with lax safety enforcement.

State media reported in January that the capsule hotel near the Shanghai Railway Station had opened on a trial basis, however when contacted by AFP at the time, the hotel's manager said they were waiting for fire permits. No one at the hotel could immediately be contacted for comment on Thursday.

Re: First capsule hotel in Shanghai opens

I would love to stay in something like this someday. I am all for novelty, "economic" hotels. I have already stayed at the easyHotel in London, which was really tiny as well and had no windows.

Re: First capsule hotel in Shanghai opens

I don't think I'm claustrophobic but I am not sure if I would be that comfortable staying in this kind of hotel. I would like to try though. I think capsule hotels are very practical and economical. Some travelers don't really need a spacious and luxury room to sleep in.

I might be which comfortable vacationing in these kinds of hotel. I'd like to try though. I think capsule hotels are practical in addition to economical. Some people don't have the need for a huge and extravagance room to settle.
