Fish Leong: Singer now, actress later, mummy never?

SINGAPORE: Mandopop singer Fish Leong, dubbed the 'Queen of Love Songs' by her fans, may be right at home singing haunting ballads in her albums, but producing an album is a whole different kettle of fish.

Fish Leong

Leong said she felt like a fish out of water when she personally produced her latest album "What Love Songs Didn't Tell You", her very first album since she signed with Universal Music last year.

"I was under tremendous pressure when I produced my latest album. I haven't really enjoyed myself because there are really a lot of things to deal with.

"The pressure is so great that I started to grind my teeth in my sleep," said Leong with a grimace, during a promotional event for her album on Friday.

"Before, I always slept very soundly but when I was producing this album, I often had nightmares!"

Fortunately, her husband Tony Chao, whom she married in a beach wedding on the Filipino island of Boracay last year in February, has been extremely supportive.

"My husband wants me to relax, take it easy and gives me a lot of encouragement. When I was working on the album, he told everyone he knew about it to promote the album.

"When he pre-ordered a lot of copies for his friends, he waved the receipt excitedly in my face," said the 31-year-old singer.

"I just told him to keep the receipt where he can find it and pasted it onto the fridge."

What? Not even a tender kiss for her supportive hubby?

"Don't we already do that (kiss) all the time!" said Leong smiling sweetly.

Fishing for a movie role

Things are looking rosy for Leong – she signed with a new label, released an album that she personally produced, has her own music company and is happily married to a very good man.

However, there were still a few things that Leong is dying to do. On top of her list is to land another movie role.

The singer revealed that she "got addicted" to acting after appearing in fellow Malaysian singer Ah Niu's debut film "Ice Kachang Puppy Love" in 2010.

"After shooting 'Ice Kachang Puppy Love', I feel as though I got hooked on film because of the sense of achievement I got from it," she gushed, adding that she was willing to work on anything except horror films.

"I won't do any ghost movies. I would probably get scared and cry even before I started shooting it.

"I think I would probably pick something more humorous or very dramatic, maybe a movie with a lot of inner struggles and crying," said a visibly excited Leong.

"I notice a lot of directors nowadays like to inject humorous scenes in serious films, so I want to try those. I used to be really afraid of shooting movies but now my views have changed. People should always try new things."

Maybe baby

Leong has some grand plans for a movie career but they will have to wait.

"I am just announcing my plans now to get the word out that I am interested in film, so people can keep me in mind and maybe plan something for 2012," said Leong, clarifying that her music will still be her main focus for this year.

"I will spend this year planning a concert tour and conceptualising my next album," said Leong.

She revealed that her fans here would not have to wait much longer to see her in concert.

Her concert tour will bring her to Singapore and other parts of Asia sometime in June.

No plans for a baby?

"I can't really answer that because my thoughts on having children change everyday," said Leong with a laugh.

"Sometimes, when I see kids, I would feel like having my own. Sometimes when work pressures mount, I will feel like I don't want kids.

"And sometimes I want to be free. So I am grappling with this question every day. I can't really answer this question."

"If it (a baby) comes, it comes. But of course, if it descends upon me like an angel, I will definitely bring it into this world."

Fish Leong's new album "What Love Songs Didn't Tell You" is out now.
