Flights to Seoul remain

Flights to Seoul remain
By Hannah Koh

FLIGHTS to Seoul by at least two major airlines will not be disrupted despite the tension between North and South Korea.

The North shelled a South Korean island on Tuesday, leaving two South Korean marines dead.

According to a Cathay Pacific press statement and a spokesperson from Singapore Airlines (SIA), both carriers will be continuing flights to the country as per normal.

However, both airlines advise passengers to check the respective airline's website for further updates.

Both SIA and Cathay Pacific have said they will continue to monitor the situation.

Korea tensions: Tourists from S'pore unfazed

Korea tensions: Tourists from S'pore unfazed

SINGAPORE - Despite escalating political tensions in the Korean peninsula - and amid reports of trip cancellations by Japanese and Chinese visitors - it seems most Singapore travellers are going ahead with their holiday plans to South Korea.

Four tour agencies which MediaCorp spoke to said they have received customer enquiries on the situation. But there were no cancellations yet.

"Our land operators have told us everything is normal and calm in Seoul at this juncture. And the (shelling at Yeonpyeong Island) is a four- to five-hour journey by speedboat, so it's not affecting the tourism activity in the main island of South Korea now," said CTC Travel senior vice-president (marketing and public relations) Alicia Seah.

South Korea-bound traveller Lee Say Ling, 38, said that, apart from getting reassurances from her travel agent, her family has been monitoring the news. They decided to continue their holiday plans as they would be going to areas that are some distance away from Yeonpyeong Island, said Mdm Lee.

Less sanguine was communications executive S E Koh, who is travelling to Seoul tomorrow with her friends.

"We'll be watching the situation closely ... if (it) intensifies over the next few days, we might re-evaluate our plans," she said.

Leisure and business travellers elsewhere are reportedly cancelling their trips to South Korea.

A spokeswoman for the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) told The Korea Times that the number of Japanese and Chinese visitors has dropped while the number of travellers from Europe and North America "remained largely unchanged''.

Ratings agency Standard and Poor's was reportedly among those cancelling business seminars in Seoul, while Japan's Sony Corp and Honda scrapped business visits.

When contacted, Singapore International Chamber of Commerce chief Phillip Overmyer said "one or two" members has expressed concern, over casual conversations, about going on business trips to South Korea. But there were no confirmed cases of cancelled meetings, he said.

Some Singaporeans thinking twice about visiting South Korea

Some Singaporeans thinking twice about visiting South Korea

But they face cancellation penalties as no MFA travel advisory has been issued

by Neo Chai Chin
05:55 AM Dec 09, 2010

SINGAPORE - Anxious about her coming holiday to South Korea - which is embroiled in cross-border tensions with the North - company secretary Sharon Lim asked her tour agency for a change in destination or a postponement.

But, in the absence of a Government travel advisory, Ms Lim was told she would have to forfeit the $500-per-person deposit already paid for her group of six.

Said Ms Lim: "It's so stressful deciding whether to go or not."

Only a week ago, MediaCorp reported that Singaporean travellers were generally unfazed about going ahead with their travel plans to South Korea amid reports that Japanese and Chinese tourists had cancelled their visits.

But, as tensions in the Korean peninsula build up, Ms Lim is not the only traveller here who is thinking twice about heading to South Korea - at least one travel agency MediaCorp contacted said that it had already received a cancellation.

Travel agencies told MediaCorp that penalties for cancellations or amendments to bookings are standard industry practice, and increase as the travel date approaches. And customers who change their bookings two to three days before travel could forfeit the full cost of the packages.

In the case of South Korea, Chan Brothers Travel spokeswoman Jane Chang reiterated that no travel advisory has been issued by the Singapore Government, and the Korea Tourism Organisation has also indicated that the country is safe.

SA Tours marketing and communications manager Eva Wu noted that, should the conflict escalate, tour leaders would be briefed on action to take and "how to keep the group safe and get them back as soon as possible".

Ms Wu added that strict cancellation policies were in place for good reason as the agencies "have paid the airlines and land operators in advance".

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson told MediaCorp that, in general, travel advisories are issued only after "thorough and rigorous assessment of a particular situation".

The spokesperson said: "The advisories are intended to help our nationals to make informed decisions on whether they should travel to these localities. Additionally, the statements are meant to reach out to Singaporeans already in these localities, providing them with advice on precautions to be taken and providing them with details of how they can contact either MFA or our missions there, should they require consular assistance."
