Berjaya Air to operate 28 weekly flights from the Budget Terminal by March 2011.

AsiaOne | Tue, Oct 19 2010

TRAVELLERS will soon be able to fly to Malaysia’s Tioman and Redang islands from Changi Airport, when Berjaya Air commences operations from Singapore’s main air hub in November.

The Malaysian carrier which currently flies in and out of Seletar Airport, will from November 1, start a 10 flights a week service between Tioman and Changi’s Budget Terminal. The flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

From Feb 28 next year, this Tioman service will be boosted to a daily basis and from March 1, flights to Redang will commence, also on a daily basis. With this, Berjaya Air will operate a total of 28 flights a week between the two islands and Changi Airport.

With their sandy beaches and rich coral reefs, Tioman and Redang are popular with both scuba divers and island holidaymakers. To get there from Singapore, island-trippers can choose between taking a cross-border express bus into Malaysia and doing a ferry transfer, or to fly from Seleter Airport on Berjaya Air.

The new services will offer travellers more options and better amenities and facilities at Changi’s Budget Terminal.

Berjaya Air is one of two carriers that the Changi Airport Group announced on Tuesday as joining the airport’s network.

Starting October 27, Philippine carrier Airphil will operate 14 weekly flights between Singapore and Manila from Changi’s Terminal 2. From December 1, it will mount 14 weekly flights between Singapore and Cebu.

Changi Airport Group’s Director, Market Development, Mr Lim Ching Kiat, said, “We have seen strong growth in traffic to the Philippines, with a 21 per cent growth in January to August 2010 compared to the same period in 2009.”
