Re: free zip program

I have been using IZarc for many years, no issues at all. IZarc

I thought WinRAR requires some registration of some sort after prolonged usage ?

Because others always use Winzip or Winrar, once you use 7zip you won't feel like using others cause things that 7zip can do others might not be able to do it

Re: free zip program

Winzip and Winrar need to pay for it. But 7zip is a freeware.
Bad point of 7zip, it only can extract .rar file but cannot zip it in .rar format

For extracting 7zip is a good products which Cisco and I recommend.

Yeah...It is the same message I am getting. I don't bother about it and continue to use it to unzip my files...

The problem with IZarc, I've used it before too, is that it either cannot read .iso files or it cannot extract .001, .002, .003 files etc. And I get them all the time when I download things so it's troublesome.

It's pretty good but it took me a while to figure how to set the icons for the file types associated with 7zip because it didn't set for me automatically.

Other than that, 7zip is lightweight and fast.

There's no advantage in saving your file format as .rar. I would say saving it as .zip format is the best if you want to send your files to your friends. 7zip has the capability to compress your zip files pretty much too. The compress size is not based on the extension type but the program.

Haha you got that right. It can't extract those .001,.002 files. I encountered those formats rather infrequently so far ..

But if you encountered it frequently, it is better to get other zipping softwares then

WinRAR can do the extration of those .002 formats pretty well.

Winrar sure can. But I would like to support free programs as far as I can if there's a good one.

I guess you must not have downloaded as many things as me to encounter .001, .002 formats often.

If I didn't remember wrongly, the speed of extraction for 7z is much faster than IZarc.

I actually did my own tests and found 7z worked best for jpg files which is what I compress the most. Tested it against zip, rear and for the hell of it, tar.gz , bz2 as well.

Too bad I'm a mac user now. :-)

Re: free zip program

WinRAR/7zip on Windows. Use 7zip with LZMA2 for compression, and either of them for opening files, they pretty much support the same formats.

The Unarchiver and Keka are also great if you're on OS X.
