French or Spanish?

I'm ready to learn a new language. Please help me decide between French and Spanish.

Re: French or Spanish?

French
- Difficult pronunciation (but once you know the rules, it's more regular than that of English)
- Grammar is somewhat similar to English but has the features of a typical romance language

Spanish
- Easy and regular pronunciation
- Grammar is also similar to English but in my opinion, more difficult that French as it has more conjugations and 2 verbs to signify "be"

Conclusion: I took O and A Level French and I tried to learn a little Spanish.. French is better in my biased opinion. C'est mieux en français à mon avis

Perdone señora, but is Spanish difficult to learn? I know it's an extremely practical language to learn (3rd most widely spoken, behind English and Mandarin Chinese), and I would really want to be able to speak Spanish, so that overseas trips to Europe (if I ever go on one in the future) will not be a pain.

Re: French or Spanish?

Both Spanish and French are romance languages, so the grammar structure is similar except for a few quirks. Rhapsody has a very good point in that French has some awkward pronunciations. I studied four years of Spanish, and I don't necessarily think that it's hard. English is harder than Spanish or French because it's related to German but was forced to act like Latin, so either language would be a lot easier and less contradictory to learn.

Re: French or Spanish?

I'm french and I learnt spanish... I think both languages are difficult compared to english for example. I think you have to reflect on which culture are you more interested in? Because in terms of difficulties it is the same, I think.
I know a lot of singaporeans talk chinese, I don't know if it is your case but surely, compared to chinese, spanish and french will be easy! ^_^

Re: French or Spanish?

I'd say Spanish I speak spanish myself, and I must say this language is a really useful and multifunctional one. Spanish is spoken in so many countries, and french is spoken in very few countries. Besides, the french pronunciation is a reall pain, specially when you start getting advanced french lessons. I tried to learn french in the past, it's easy once you learn spanish Once you learn spanish, you can easily learn french as well.

You just need get used to the use of ''gender''. The gender part is the most tricky one, like for example: el perro vs la perra. The pronunciation in spanish is way more easy than in french, because most words are pronounced the same way they're written!

Re: French or Spanish?

Spanish is definitely more useful, according to wiki it is ahead of English as the second most spoken language. Even more so if you are a football fan

It is easier to speak than French surely. If you are Chinese, imagine being able to command the 3 most spoken languages in the world...

Re: French or Spanish?

Although French and Spanish are both Romance languages, but the advantage of Spanish is that mastering it helps you to partially learn the (relatively more) intimately related languages of Italian and Portugese. In other words, learning Spanish = partially learning Italian and Portugese. Buy 1 get another 0.1 + 0.1 free.

Re: French or Spanish?

I think for English speakers, Dutch will be the easiest followed by German.

All 3 are from the same language group branch

Re: French or Spanish?

I would say French if u r planning to go to France, Belgium or Africa, or Mauritius etc. Spanish if its parts of America or Spain. French is offered at a lvl n o lvl, so I think its more commonly taken here.
n there are more French schools which teach without a focus on speaking or writing exclusively.
for Spanish, I'm not sure if Las lilas or other Spanish schools have advanced Spanish.
but apparently, many ppl like me hope to take a lvl French one day, n the demand is there, so they have courses, shld u decide to become an advanced learner, not just a debutante.
French toast has advanced courses. Very credible centre. Dedicated teachers. More affordable than other centres. French studio has French courses, seems good. But idk if they have advanced or intermediate ones yet.
alliance francaise has many levels of courses, n it regularly organises events too.
