KENYAN elite runners again dominated the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) yesterday, sweeping the men's and women's open categories for the second year running.

Charles Mwai Kanyao won the men's open category with a time of 2hr 14min 33.75sec. In his first major marathon race, the 35-year-old edged out compatriots Luka Kipkemoi Chelimo and John Kelai, who finished in 238.75 and 246.56 respectively.

Kanyao, who won prize money of US$50,000 (S$64,200), said: "It is not easy to win. I trained very hard for this race. The race was difficult, but I did my best. It's my first time in Singapore and I'm glad I came here and won the race."

Meanwhile, Irene Jerotich Kosgei retained her women's open crown with a time of 242.39, almost one minute ahead of Ethiopia's Roman Gebregessesse (230.74). Kenya's Magdelene Mukunzi (206.36) completed the top three.

Kosgei said: "At the 35km mark, I stepped up my pace just as I did last year. As I am familiar with the course, I knew which routes were hard to run, and which were easy."

National runners Mok Ying Ren and Qi Hui retained their Singapore men's and women's full-mara- thon titles.

Mok crossed the line with a time of 201.24 to claim the men's title. He said: "I was injured for the past four months, but my fans were helping me along the way, telling me where my competitors were and I adjusted my pace along the way."

Qi, who topped her category with a time of 3:06:20.89, said: "I have been looking forward to this race the entire year. I really enjoyed the race.

I feel like I have been well taken care of."

The SCMS took a record 65,000 participants through the iconic sights of Singapore, including Chinatown, Universal Studios Singapore, Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay area before finishing at the Padang.
