Re: Geography/ History

Geography in my opinion however it basically depends on one's study style.I take pure geography and managed to score an A2 for my end of year for sec 3,like the only one out of 3 or 2 people in the level of like 200 plus people. If u take pure geog,i personally feel more effort and time has to be spent on human geography as physical geography is easy to grasp hold of(I only spent 1hr reading 3 gateways on physical geography, amounting to 300 pages). As long as effort is put in,distinction is achievable although I slacked quite a lot =/

Re: Geography/ History

If you can memorize and regurgitate well, i'd say history. It pays off more. Also, history will give you advantage in SS. SBQ and essay skills are the same. For geog though, imo it is more interesting.

Re: Geography/ History

Don't choose which one is easier to score. Choose the one where you feel more comfortable studying overall. Had a friend who chose Geography because it was "seemingly easier" and he realized that he should have switched to History after he saw how similar it is to SS (the format)

choosing easier is good but you must understand where your strong points lie rather than just following what is easy.

Is normal if one doesnt do well for pure geog initially due to heavy content. It takes a lot of time to memorise unless u prioritise your time after school at home etc.

As for history,i doubt even regurgitating and hardcore memorising helps. There are industrious-wannabe history students in my class who failed miserably too

Re: Geography/ History

Hi.

In my own opinion, I feel that Geography is easier than History, in terms of answering the questions.

In Geography, one way to score well is by memorising, and this really helps. The question types are also relatively 'general', in the sense that the questions are just 'ask & answer'. Just answer straight to the question. There are no much 'special skills' that you need to master, maybe with the exception of answering open-ended questions, which requires candidates to make evaluation.

This is different from History, where candidates need to have the skills to answer Source Based Case Study. For Source-Based Case Study, candidates need to master different 'skills'; like inference with motive, comparison (similarity & differences); reliability; utility (or commonly known as usefulness) as well as answering hybridised questions. However, these are also covered in Social Studies, hence this should not be an issue if you are doing well for Social Studies (Paper 1 of Combined Humanities).

In terms of content, I think that Geography is also easier to understand as compared to History. Contents covered in History are very 'factual', just like reading a novel. As for Geography, the Physical Geography section is like Science, whereas the Human Geography section is more like contemporary issues as well as common sense. It is easier to study for Geography, in my opinion.

All the best for your future endeavour.

Best Regards,
