Girls traveling alone in Hong Kong

Is it a bad idea to plan to travel to Hong Kong alone? I don't know the language and am a little afraid to be in such a strange city by myself. Normally, I go everywhere alone when I travel. I'm not so sure about Hong Kong.

Re: Girls traveling alone in Hong Kong

Hmm I've not travelled to HK before, but planning to do so.
Anyway my friend who have been there, said its quite safe there.

Language wise, most young people can speak English if you can't speak Cantonese.
English is widely taught in schools and understood, although locals don't practise speaking it so they may not be that good in it.
Just don't even utter Mandarin in front of them as they would detest you, scold you and treat you rudely. Either Cantonese or English.

A guideline is, just be safe as you would do anywhere. Don't go into dark alleys especially at night, stay in a well-known and reputable hotel in a brightly lit and populated area, don't go clubbing and nightclubs alone or wander around at late night near the clubbing areas alone. Lan Kwai Fong (蘭桂坊) has lots of pubs and clubs in the area, so you might wanna take note.

Re: Girls traveling alone in Hong Kong

That's weird. I recall speaking Mandarin to people in Hong Kong before and the treatment I got was fine.

But I would say most of the Hong Kong people I have meet don't speak good English.

Re: Girls traveling alone in Hong Kong

What aforl said pretty much sums up what I wanted to say. Hong Kong is generally safe to roam around alone in daylight. But when night comes, you should be more wary and alert about your surroundings.

Hong Kong's roads are more complex compared to Singapore, so you may want to get a map or study the map before going to your destination to prevent yourself from getting lost, unless you are planning to go wherever it takes you.

You can converse with the locals in Mandarin, it's fine. They don't hate it.

Re: Girls traveling alone in Hong Kong

Be careful when you go to the night markets, like those stalls at Mong Kok.
They will try to scam you if you speak english and seem like a tourist, most of the time you can actually buy the goods for 30% of their price.
And most locals don't speak english, only those that are younger and around 20.
If you speak chinese it will be easier to communicate but Hong Kong people dislike China mainlanders.

Hong Kong people dislike China people. Hence, avoid speaking mandarin.

Still almost same. They feel Chinese is the language of mainland and therefore if you speak in the language of the people they really hate, then you'll be treated badly.

Speak Cantonese or English.

When you determine whether a city is safe, the language is usually not the largest factor. FOR EXAMPLE, Washington DC, where violent crime rate is 1.2 % (FBI, 2010), is less safe than Seoul whose violent crime rate is 0.7% (서울 통계, 2011) and yet you can speak English but not Korean.

Re: Girls traveling alone in Hong Kong

Dear Friends,

I was reading the discussions here of both genders and people from almost entire continents in world. People want to move towards their favorite places but they are feeling their selves uncomfortable and shy. I do not know that what is the real matter behind but the one thing is common among all and that is fear factor from a strange and new world that is not allowing you to move alone. It is nothing any thing else which can not be over come. Just think you can do this and do it. You are not going to move to a strange island or in the world of aliens where you can be killed. So boost up and enjoy the beauty of God.

Re: Girls traveling alone in Hong Kong

I think if you know the language and has the courage to travel to Hong Kong alone, then it's fine to travel alone as long as you're willing to do so. My wife has traveled to Hong Kong alone for a few times, which she thinks it's alright. I think the biggest concern is safety, which is kind of dangerous to travel to Hong Kong if you don't know the area that well.
