Walk near Nippori station, Ueno station, Harajuku station, Ginza station.

What I like to do is choose a train line, then board the train and stop when I see a station cute enough. Usually, the surroundings are as cute/interesting.

Useless advice if you're into shopping.

Hokkaido (the city) sucks, don't bother going there.
And there are Onsens all over the country anyway.

Kamakura, near Tokyo is nice too.

hokkaido seafood is cheap and nice, and the hot spring make your body feel so relax.

Re: going to japan~~

hmmm....ur question is quite broad, so it may be hard for me to give an answer unless u give something more specific

depends on what u are seeking...i suppose u will be shopping ba

if that's the case, try harajuku, shibuya, ginza, shinjuku etc

Re: going to japan~~

Load of niggahs at Harajuku.

But they're friendly :3.(Though I must warn you, it's rather boring at Harajuku because there's only one wide alley)

Shinjuku is a naise place.

Good for street and alley shopping.

It's quiet and peaceful in the morning and at night.

Hakone was a bad experience for me because I get nauseous if I stay too long on vehicles uphill.

Akihabara for electronics ;D( I wouldn't recommend buying electronic stuff in other countries though, unless warranty is online).

I forgot the name of the place where there's loads of good food.

If you're afraid of losing your way, don't worry.

Kindly ask any pedestrian as most of them know basic english(Convenient for me as I know advanced japanese :/)

(Tip, if they give you a ticket(or something like that), remember to ask them what if may be as most likely it's a shinkansen chiketo.

I'll add more if I remember

Re: going to japan~~

tokyo is huge. but some of my fave places are:
- the tsukiji fish market. go there early in the morning and check out the FAT tunas. i also love looking at the diff seafood (i dont like eating it but they are beautiful to look - hence, see-food.)
- ginza. just cos it's supposedly the most expensive place in the world, sorta.
- akihabara. just to check out maid cafes, i guess. you can probably skip that, unless you plan on dressing up as one to surprise your bf then you can go and do some homework there.
- tokyo disneyland and seaworld. im a MM fan
- odaiba. i just love this place. especially on a rainy day. ah.... memories....
- visit a tokyo department store. these things are becoming dinosaur so catch them while you can! their food department is stupendous.
- i dont care for harajuku and shinjuku cos im not female and not into fashion. but i guess you will

Re: going to japan~~

The sumo matches are an eyeopener but the ones in Tokyo just ended in Jan; if you going in May and Sep, might catch it again though - otherwise you would have to head to places like Osaka or Nagoya

If you are into more traditional stuff, there's a kabuki theatre at Ginza - kabuki being a Japanese dance/drama with their actors and actress wearing very heavy makeup

Harajuku's good for catching cosplay - though only on Sundays - while you are there, can also go to Meiji Shrine and Takeshita dori

If you have time to go out of Tokyo, nearby Nikko, Kamakura, Mount Takao, Fujiyama Wonderland are fantastic as well.

Honestly, too many things you can do in Japan - even after going there so many times, I'm still loving it!

Re: going to japan~~

i was scared of running out of money, so i brought at least sgd 1800

i stay at minshuku/hostel managed by taiwanese cuz their rates are lower....usually about 3000 yen per night (sgd 45)

i allocate at least 2000 yen per day for my meals (no breakfast) but i usually try to get food under 800 yen....and for a 7 day trip, 10000 yen for trainfare but i usually allocate 15000 yen for trainfare cuz i like going weird places via train in japan....

so yeah, those are my basic + the airfare which i think usually northwest airlines give reasonable rates but problem is airfares tend to fluctuate

sakura season should be in late march or early april...but nowadays global warming is causing the sakura season to be earlier (heard reports that it's already quite warm in japan now)

food costs can be cut further if you bring some instant noodles from SG (later can replace the food space with stuff you buy from tokyo) and buy drinks and snacks from their supermarkets instead of their convenience stores or shopping malls. esp. bottled water.

Re: going to japan~~

i went in a group of 4....but all of us had only one common interest: fly together to japan and most of the time we walk around japan independently unless got common area to visit

that time was in luck cuz singapore started to use the exchange rate to curb inflation so japanese yen went to quite a good rate....1000 yen = 12.6 dollars at that time

i assume u just want go for 7 days.....

airfare: assume to be 800 dollars (in case of crazy spikes in fares)
train fare: i think 8000 yen is enough for 7 days but usually 10000 yen to play safe ba (when u near the end of ur trip, u can allocate some cash for ur train to airport and the rest use for shopping)
food: 1000 per meal less breakfast, so it's 1000 X 2 X 7 = 14000 yen (most of the time, i dont eat 1000 yen meals)
accomodation: can be a little steep if u going alone cuz it'll be instead 3300 yen per night i think....taiwanese minshuku give u cheaper rate the more people going with u....the one i went went down to about 2500 yen per nite & person cuz got 4 people i think (price might not be the same now)...so if u calculate: 3000 X 7 = 21000 yen

so if all add up (the basics): 21000 + 14000 + 10000 = 45000 yen (692 dollars then add airfare = 1492 in total for basic...but trust me, i think if u get discount for lodging, dont eat exactly 1000 yen meals, and usually commute around tokyo area, wont come to 692 dollars...maybe about 500 to 600 liddat)

i went to japan using such a formula....and i think i exchanged for too much yen....end of my trip i still had about 30000 yen unused (about 461 dollars)...but i went for 25 days cuz my group made a mistake in booking....but the more the merrier perhaps? 25 days wasnt enough....like i just scratched the tip of the iceberg only

i think if u r gonna shop, then maybe ur target of 4k might be good....well, just dont overspend

4k more than enough for 7 days. but if during peak tourist season (sakura), you better book your hotel in advance or else no place to sleep ah.
if you dont intend to visit multiple japanese cities and just explore tokyo, then you dont need to get j-rail pass (which you have to get before you travel to japan)
odaiba has the Fuji TV building - if you can get someone in japan to arrange for you, you can even attend a programme. likewise if you wanna catch some j-pop concert.
most of the fun places are outside tokyo proper: disneyland, hello kitty (sanrio puroland) but they are not far off. just need to take a daytrip out via train.
as for things to buy. get food! a lot of food you cannot get in SG and they are in nicely packaged boxes, ready for you to distribute to your loved ones. or else get mickey mouse/hello kitty original stuff at exorbitant prices (even if the stuff are made in china)
