Default Guide On How To Rip PSP Games With UMDGen

Here Is A Guide On How To Rip PSP Games With UMDGen Please Say Thanx And I Hope This Tutorial Comes In Handy Cheesy

Some useful files and programs to help you with ripping games

UMDGEN
You can open and modify ISOs using UMDGEN, the latest version is currently 4.00
(note: the pictures in this guide are from UMDGEN v3.50, but they should be similar to UMDGEN v4.00)
Link here

2 second blank PMF movie file (50kb)
use it to replace video files if you don't want to relink video files.
Link here

PMF video decoder for windows
with this you can play PMF movies in almost any media player in windows.
you can use UMDGEN or Winrar to extract the PMF files from the ISO.
now you can easily see if the video is one you want to keep or one you want to rip out.
note: you won't hear any sound because this is just a video decoder.
Link here

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What relinking does...

It re-directs the game to use another file. example, you have three movie files totaling 165mb.

opening.pmf : 5mb
cutscene.pmf : 100mb
ending.pmf : 60mb
what you can do is re-direct the cutscene movie to the opening movie.
to do this, you first set the opening.pmf file as a "master" file, then relink cutscene.pmf to it.
now when the game plays the cutscene file, it will be re-directed to the opening movie.

now instead of the movies being 165mb in total, its only 65mb...
why 65mb?, relinking files does not use extra space as you are not making a copy of file,
you are only directing the game to load a different file thats already there.

example:
opening.pmf : 5mb
cutscene.pmf : uses the same data as opening.pmf so it isn't counted again.
ending.pmf : 60mb

Only relink file of the same type, e.g don't relink a video file to an audio file, your game won't work if you do this.
some games may freeze if it tries to load a file thats been deleted,
you should use the blank PMF file to replace a video instead of deleting it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Games that use LBA Protection:
A few games will use LBA protection. In you edit the game in any way then it will not start or it will freeze on a black screen when started.
A good way to check is to only remove the update folder, save it and try playing it.
If the game won't start / freezes on a blank screen then that game has a high chance of being LBA protected.

Games that use LBA Protection:
* Bounty Hounds (China, Japan, and USA versions)
* Bleach: Heat The Soul 3 (Japan)
* Cars (USA, possibly all other regions too?)
* Densha de Go Pocket Toukaidousen Hen (Japan)
* Densha de Go! Pocket: Chuuousenhen (Japan)
* Eureka Seven (Japan)
* Gripshift (USA)
* Hot Shots Golf - Open Tee (USA)
* Initial D - Street Stage (Japan)
* Rockman Dash - Hanage no Boukenshin (Japan)
* Taiko no Tatsujin Portable (Japan)
* WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 (USA, possibly Europe too??)

Note: Instructions on how to rip these LBA protected games is near the bottom of the post.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to Rip an PSP Game:

Getting Started:
Open UMDGEN and open the game you want to rip. UMDGEN v4.00 can open and edit compressed games.
there is no need to convert your CSOs to ISOs before ripping like you did in UMDGEN v3.50.

Some games have all their DATA in one or two big files, (games like DJMax Portable / Monster Hunter Freedom)
If your game is like that then you won't be able to rip anything from it unless you have a special "unpacker" program for that game.

Optimizing your Game in One Click
Go to the 'UMD Properties' Tab and click the "optimize" button on the lower left.
This one-click button will automatically remove the Update folder and the 'UMD Padding' saving you a bit of time

Removing Padding files in One Click
Padding files make the data closer to the edge of the UMD disc for faster loading times.
Since you aren't playing from a UMD those padding files aren't needed and can be removed.
Simply press the 'Dummy Search' button on the toolbar and UMDGEN will scan for and resize the un-needed padding files.
UMDGEN will then show a message with the filenames of all the files that have been detected to be padding files.

Relinking / Deleting Video Files
Video files are normally "PMF" files, but sometimes they will be a different type, it depends on the game.
the files are normally found in a folder called "Video" / "Movie" / "Cutscene" etc
you might have to look around in the ISO if the game has a lot of files.

Sometimes games will have "bonus" preview videos for other games or will have video files in multiple languages
You are only going to be playing the game in one language, so you can relink / delete the other languages to save space.

As you can see below, this game has video files for French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and English video files.

Step 1: Right click the english video and choose "File Relinker" -> "Use Selected File as Source"

Step 2: Highlight all the non-english videos and choose "File Relinker" -> "Relink to <<Filename>>"

You will notice that the SIZE and LBA is the same for all the files you relinked.
simply repeat this process for any other videos you find.
note: sometimes the filenames will be shortened, like:
FR = French, GE = German, IT = Italian, SP = Spanish, EN = English etc
If you can't find an english video, look for a file with a similar name, e.g:
Video_00_fr.pmf <- French Video
Video_00_ge.pmf <- German Video
Video_00_it.pmf <- Italian Video
Video_00_sp.pmf <- Spanish Video
Video_00.pmf <- English Video

Sometimes replacing a video with the blank PMF may be a better option if you don't want to watch the same video over and over again.
Get the blank video at the top of this page and rename it exactly the same name as the filename in the game (eg Video_00.pmf)
in UMDGEN delete the video file, now right-click in the filename area and choose "add -> existing files" and choose your blank renamed PMF.
Tip: once you have one blank PMF file, you can simply relink to that and save space instead of having multiple blank videos.

If you have the PMF decoder installed, you can highlight one or multiple PMF video files in UMDGEN,
right-click on the files and choose "extract selected", choose a folder to save the files to and click ok.
now you can view the files in media player and decide what videos you want to keep and what videos to rip out.

Relinking / Deleting Music Files
Music files are usually in AT3 format, sometimes it will be in a different format, it depends on the game.
the files are normally found in a folder called "Music" / "Audio" / "Sound" etc
you might have to look around in the ISO if the game has a lot of files.
Repeat the relinking steps above / delete the files if you want to rip audio from the game
Its exactly the same as videos, only you select an audio file instead of a video file.

How to Dummy a file
To dummy a file and fill it with empty space, right click the file and choose 'dummy' this may work better on some games.
If you do this then you need to save your game as a compressed CSO/DAX to take advantage of the space saving.

Once you are happy with the size of your rip, choose file > save as > compressed (*.CSO), choose a name for your CSO and click "Save"
Now test your game and see if it works.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instructions on how to rip an LBA protected game:
(You can use these instructions to rip a non-LBA protected game as well)

1. Open your game in UMDGEN v4.00.
2. Go to 'File > Filelist > Export' to save a text file with the LBA addresses of each file in the ISO)
3. Open the SYSDIR \ UPDATE \ folder.
4. Highlight the update files and choose "dummy" and the files will turn 'red'
5. Repeat the above step to 'Dummy' all the other files you don't want (videos / music etc)

Notes about ripping:
* You can relink files, but the size of the source file (the file you are linking from) MUST be smaller then the destination file.
When relinking the source file will copied into the ISO twice, you will only gain the 'difference' in size between the two files.

* You can replace files, but they MUST be equal or smaller then the size of the original file.

6. Once you have finished ripping, go to 'file > filelist > import' and import the text file you exported in step 2.
Choose 'Yes' to force the files to use the new LBA positions.
You will get an error if you relinked / replaced files that are bigger then the source file.

7. Save your game as a CSO using compression (if the game lags while compressed, use compression level 1)
You need to use CSO because compression makes the files you dummied to use almost zero space.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ripping Extra Languages:

This depends on the ISO you are trying to rip. Most of the time you just need to look at the filenames of the files in the ISO.
From what I've seen when I have been ripping, games filenames will have two or three letters in it so you can tell the languages apart.

ENG or EN = English (I have seen INT being used in a few games...)
GER or GE or GR = German
ITA or IT = Italian
FRE or FR = French
SPA or SP = Spanish
and so on... Its normally the first two or three letters of the name of the language...

The three language Europe version of MYST has English, German and French languages.
Looking around in the folders of the ISO, You can see that there are a lot of filenames that are named similar:

Example 1. GameMenuEn.bin, GameMenuFr.bin, GameMenuGr.bin
Example 2. ATR1Page_1En.bin, ATR1Page_1Fr.bin, ATR1Page_1Ge.bin

As you can see, there is "En = English", "Fr = French" and "Gr = German" languages

You have three options:
1. You can relink the English language to the other languages. (Recommended)
2. You can delete the French and German languages directly in UMDGEN.
3. You can extract the entire ISO, delete the files in Windows Explorer and rebuild the ISO.

Option 1: Relinking:
Step 1. GameMenuEn.bin (Right Click) -> File Relinker -> Use selected file as source.
Step 2. GameMenuFr.bin (Right Click) -> File Relinker -> Relink to "Path\to\file\filename.ext" (The file will turn blue, showing its relinked)
Step 3. GameMenuGr.bin (Right Click) -> File Relinker -> Relink to "Path\to\file\filename.ext" (The file will turn blue, showing its relinked)
Step 4. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 for the other files.

Option 2: Deleting using UMDGEN
Step 1: Highlight the file you want to delete.
Step 2: Press "delete" on your keyboard
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other files.

Option 3: Deleting the files using Windows Explorer.
Step 1. Extract the entire ISO to a folder
Step 2. Delete the files for the extra languages
Step 3. Re-build the ISO by dragging the PSP_GAME folder and UMD_DATA.BIN file into a new UMDGEN Compilation.
Step 4. Save the ISO to a new file.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

File Extractors / Repackers for Packed Games

Some games store all the data in one or two huge data files, you can't rip them yourself without a special extractor program.
Here is a list of extractor programs I have made that can help unpack and repack these big files.

If you have a request for an unpacker/repacker and I have the game, I'll see if I can make one...

Movie Extractor for Valkyrie Profile - Lenneth (U)

Music Extractor for DJMax Portable International (K)

Music Extractor for DJMax Portable (K) (Korean Version)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It may take you a few tries to learn how to rip, once you know how to do it,
you can choose what you want to keep and delete from your games instead of
downloading already ripped games which may have files removed that you wanted to keep.

Happy Ripping...
