Any guitarists here who own and play a 12-string guitar? Care to share your experience? Can they be used to pluck? Tks. Status Update: looking for volunteers to help grow student forums..... 15-03-2013, 02:23 PM

Gender: | Re: Guitarists: 12-string guitar? is almost the same as 6 string, as in u play 2 string for a note.
12 string will sound more warm than a 6 string guitar but good luck when u want to restring.

Gender: | Re: Guitarists: 12-string guitar? Wahh, 12 string? Abit rare? I think it produces a ''thicker'' sound but is more heavy than a normal one
And ya, like what kenzogackt said, restring is well, time-consuming I guess?

Gender: | Re: Guitarists: 12-string guitar? nah its not rare, i've seen it alot. the strings are placed one over another, so when you strum it plays 2 same notes, only different octaves. the sound is definitely warmer, but i dont really see the point in it. plus, tuning that monster must be a punishment. |

Gender: | Re: Guitarists: 12-string guitar? yerp...true as what Alcoholique say. they are very common outside (Bon Jovi used it if I'm not wrong), not sure about Singapore. but they do sell here. Only the top 4 strings have an octave pitching, while the bottom 2 are the same...unless you're using an "octavinator" on a 6-string guitar through an amplifier. I think it's a bit harder to play some chords because of the pitching i guess. I never owe one, will get one someday.

Gender: | Re: Guitarists: 12-string guitar? got sell 12-strings replacement strings...and changing of strings is still easy. if you have seen a 12 string accoustic b4, it has 12 gotohs and 12 holes on the bridge. just change the strings the normal way.
12 strings, i think, does not need to be heavy. depends on the type of wood it uses, and usually if it is heavy, also not as heavy as a bass or electric guitar. The 12 gotohs and the bridge contributes to the weight.
Got electric 12 strings also. 12 strings can be pluck and thats the usual way of playing a 12 string and thats the main use of a 12 strings as it sounds more dreamy. suitable for playing arepeggios. take a look at this video. this guitarist uses a triple neck guitar:
1st neck = 12 string
2nd neck = 6 string fretless
3rd neck = normal 6 string with floyd rose
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Lu9n1_bB0aU
notice how he uses the 12 strings. and this is a picture of his triple neck guitar and its specs.
and his 12 string electric guitar:
and last thing to add on: you do not need a 12-string to look or sound pro. =)

Gender: | Re: Guitarists: 12-string guitar? Yup I've takamine. It can be used for plucking but more advisable for strumming. The sound is way much fuller than a 6 string. Good for unplugged performances. |
