HELP! Can teaching primary 1 kid get any suckier?

Thank you SGCLUB for creating this ranting heaven for us. Finally I can have my complaint here.

Currently I am teaching this Primary 1 school kid, some more she is a GIRL. Primary 1 content is so much different from what we did a decade ago but it is still easy.

EASY TO UNDERSTAND (for us only) BUT SUPER HARD TO TEACH!!!

Teach her maths. 50cents + 50 cents = $1, she understood. Then, $83 + $17 = $100, she wrote $1. Then I told her, didn't you just worked out $100 in your addition formula, why did u write $1? She replied, "$100 = $1".

After explaining to her, she still remained stubborn and insisted in her own ways. I dont know if she did it purposely or really stupid, but this is getting up to my nerves. She keep moving around when I am teaching her and she is not even concentrating.

During tuition, she would keep fidgeting and talking/thinking about other things. Then, if you start to get fierce with her, she would keep finding excuses like her stomach pain, headache, hungry and blah blah blah!!! She just wanna run away from tuition.

So PLEASE HELP! Tell me how to get her butt stick on the chair and eyes on the book! Her father told me that I am being over-friendly to her and that I am young (20) compared to the other tutors she had. (whom are in the 40s)

I don't like to be fierce seriously, but now I have to cos' I realised thats the way to make her listen. And it really works for AWHILE.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE???? I FEEL LIKE STRANGLING HER!!!! (I dont like kids in the first place and learning to like now!)

i taught 2 P1 kids too.. 1 boy and 1 girl at the same time. i always use the same trick..
treat her to a small candy. mention that if she is a good girl throughout and she can remember wat you teach her for the entire lesson, the candy bar will belong to her.. and pray that she is a glutton..
my students love gums, so i used gums instead of candy...

as for the $100 bucks qns.. you can bring some fake money, self drawn.. and re-enact a situation for her to see..

Take out 2 note, $1 dollar note and $100 dollar note.. Tell her to choose only one..Now we'll see who is acting dumb

tell her if she could sit down and listen throughout the lesson, you'll treat her to sweets and if she could answer a qn correctly, she'll get rewarded.
and the $100 qn... you gotta tell her the difference.
it does take some time to realise her maths is wrong.

i used to be one like the girl you're teaching.
just explain nicely and draw out if necessary. some kids understands thru drawings or some examples

use vondue method... it will work once she knows she will get treats whenever she behaved

i was caned by my tuition teachers all the way till im primary 5... so poor thing...

I think in general all kids are hard to teach nowadays. My friend used to tutor this Sec 4 girl for her O levels biology and she nearly puked blood when this girl said this sentence, "Oh so air goes into our lungs after we breathed".

It's like OF COURSE, if not go where? My friend had a really hard time tutoring her cos she is also very stubborn and at the same time common sense-less.

be teacher must be patient, not all students are of the same level. Some slower, some faster. Next time they might be much clever than you!

I think she will sooner or later get sick of my teaching. Even me get tired of saying the SAME OLD THINGS again.

Btw, I don't think she is stupid. Even you use sweets to hook her, she won't go to your bait. She is too rich to have everything.

wah.. a kid born with a golden spoon in her mouth? die liao.. mayb u would like to provide information whether she is spoiled by her parents? cos if watever she wants, her parents will get for her, thn oso no point using the "candies" method as i doubt it will work.

make the lessons more active and fun ba. i learnt that ppl are categorized into visual, auditory and kinestatic. mayb tt kid does not belong to auditory group whom prefer learning by listening?

as mentioned earlier, u said that the gal likes to fidget alot during tuition. i guess she has high possibilities in belonging to the kinestatic group. i tink u can try to teach her by having hands on activities like for example, u print out some food pictures and some specimen dollars (better if the dollars are of smaller change e.g. $2, $5 and not $100). thn u can play those "buying game". u act as a buyer, and she act as a seller. thn u tell her "if i were to buy ___ items for a certain amount of money" and hand her the specimen dollars. ask her how much had she earn and she will start counting the money. thn she can see the different in terms of notes quantity for the $1 and the $100.

dunno if tis can work, u might wan to gif it a try.

Wouldnt say the kid is extremely rich, but she has her maid with her all the times. Even though her parents are quite rich and kinda spoilt her, they are very strict with her schoolwork.

They even call me to ask about her progress everytime! Her maid also need to report to her father every now and then! Zzz...

Ask her which one she wants.
But then give her only 1 candy, cos $100=$1. XD
