Re: Help to explain this word?

Reminds me of my GP lessons, where the word "irony" is often followed by "Ideally it is supposed...but in reality it is..."

I guess you can say that, what is actually happening is not what it is SUPPOSED to happen.

there's no equivalent to the concept of irony in the Chinese language. In the chinese language phrasings are unambiguous in intent, and therefore there is no way to express irony using chinese syntax.

Re: Help to explain this word?

Just tell your friend this : " A father tell his son smoking is bad for health and he smokes himself." This is call ironic. =)
Hope it helps.

Re: Help to explain this word?

I might try “很讽刺地”.

A lot of words won't have direct 1-to-1 translations that can bring out the exact meaning or nuance of the original word, so the translation I would pick would depend on the whole context of the sentence in which the word is used.

Re: Help to explain this word?

The most appropriate Chinese translation for "ironical" is 具有讽刺意味的, 带有讽刺性的

Re: Help to explain this word?

lol. In year one of university I took a course called "Understanding Irony". The conclusion at the end of the course is that one cannot truly define what irony means.

So if I can't even define irony in the english language, I dunno how I can provide you with the chinese translation. But yes, 讽刺 is probably about as close as it comes
